“For those who love baseball, the game holds deep personal meaning and echoes to the past that are undeniable but often hard to articulate. Christian Sheppard’s The Ancient Wisdom of Baseball is a love letter to baseball that explains its connections to our inner lives and to classical lore in a way that makes one pine for Opening Day.”  —THEO EPSTEIN

Who are you, how are you supposed to live, and what about happiness? Answers to age-old questions are offered in classic myths about heroes, gods, and monsters, and at the ballgame.

In The Ancient Wisdom of Baseball, author Christian Sheppard interweaves Homer’s epics with glorious stories from the green fields of America’s pastime, celebrating Achilles’ courage and Odysseus’ cunning along with the virtues of Hall of Fame
players such as Jackie Robinson and Babe Ruth and of great teams such as the 2004 Red Sox and the 2016 Cubs. Along the way, Sheppard humorously recollects trying to raise his baby daughter true to the teachings of ancient myth and his beloved game.
The result is an endearing, insightful, and inspiring guide to cultivating virtue and becoming the hero of your own life’s odyssey.

What is masculinity? Dominating the world around us, with deadly gun violence, male suicide rates and incels on Reddit, masculinity is perceived to be 'toxic', 'fragile' and 'in crisis'.In this audiobook, beautifully narrated by the author, JJ Bola exposes masculinity as a performance that men are socially conditioned into. Using examples of non-Western cultural traditions, music and sport, he shines light on historical narratives around manhood, debunking popular myths along the way. He explores how LGBTQ men, men of colour, and male refugees experience masculinity in diverse ways, revealing its fluidity, how it's strengthened and weakened by different political contexts, such as the patriarchy or the far-right, and perceived differently by those around them.At the heart of love and sex, the political stage, competitive sports, gang culture, and mental health issues, lies masculinity: Mask Off is an urgent call to unravel masculinity and redefine it.

Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award Finalist
"So what are you? Go back where you belong!"
Majority white American culture has historically marginalized people of color, who at times feel invisible and alienated and at other times are traumatized by oppression and public discrimination. This reality leads to a particular kind of aloneness: ethnic and racial loneliness.
An Indian American immigrant who grew up in white Southern culture, Prasanta Verma names and sheds light on the realities of ethnic loneliness. She unpacks the exhausting effects of cultural isolation, the dynamics of marginalization, and the weight of being other. In the midst of disconnection and erasure, she points to the longing to belong, the need to share our stories, and the hope of finding safe friendships and community. Our places of exile can become places where we find belonging—to ourselves, to others, and to God.

The volume covers a range of topics related to American education from a Hispanic point of view. Legislative intervention in the teaching of social studies in Florida, critical race theory in education, strengths and weaknesses of the decentralized American education system, and the higher education of Hispanics in the United States, are some of the topics explored. The volume concludes with a critical interpretation of the shortage of teachers in the State of Florida at a time of great socioeconomic and political polarization in the United States of America, as a representative case of the central debates in education of the second decade of the twenty-first century.

    Sartor Resartus

    Thomas Carlyle

Sartor Resartus is one of the most unusual, even quirky, British novels to emerge from the first half of the 19th century. Published in 1836, its varied heritage reflects the earlier eccentricities of Sterne and Swift, curiously mixed with influences from Goethe.

Its subject matter is strange: it concerns a book called Clothes: Their Origin and Influence by one Diogenes Teufelsdröckh, a German philosopher. And though Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) became a household name in his lifetime, especially for his essays, and his work as an historian and philosopher, his comic novel Sartor Resartus would prove to have a lasting effect on contemporary writers. American figures in particular - Emerson, Dickinson, Melville and Twain among them - acknowledged its influence.

In addition, Jorge Luis Borges was among the 20th-century writers to salute the work, which he encountered aged 17. Borges reflects: 'I read Sartor Resartus, and I can recall many of its pages; I know them by heart.' Sartor Resartus (which means 'The Tailor Re-tailored') chronicles the struggles of an unnamed editor attempting to produce an English-language edition of a publication, which, according to the man who has sent it to him, is 'a work of philosophy which has taken all Europe by storm'.

This is the book on clothes by Teufelsdröckh, with whom the editor was briefly acquainted on his travels. However, the more vigorously the editor sets himself to his task, the more thankless and perhaps impossible it proves. In frustration, he shares fragments of the translated work with his readers, in the search for some collective insight. When a biography of the author arrives, promising to bring some context to the work, the editor finds himself even further at a loss. His trust in Teufelsdröckh begins to unravel, and he becomes suspicious that nothing about this book, not even its author, is as it appears to be. Is it a work of genius? A palimpsest with a secret hidden in its depths? Or is the editor in receipt of something completely different and wholly unexpected? Sartor Resartus may now largely exist in the shadows of On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History, and his account of the French Revolution, but this early novel represents an interesting phase in Carlyle’s literary output.

China today is never out of the news: from international finance to human rights controversies, global coverage of its rising international presence, and the Chinese "economic miracle." This Very Short Introduction offers the listener an entry to understanding the world's most populous nation, giving an integrated picture of modern Chinese society, culture, economy, politics, and art. In this new edition, Rana Mitter addresses China's current global position, accounting for the country's growth in global significance over the past decade.
