When a midlife crisis threatens his marriage and an open-minded therapist offers him MDMA, the author learns just how trippy a search for meaning can get.
Like many children of immigrants, Seth Lorinczi knew only the major plot points of his Hungarian backstory. But when he stumbles upon his father’s memoirs, he realizes the antisemitic violence and trauma suffered by his Holocaust Survivor forebears might be guiding his worldview and actions in unseen ways. Eventually, the quest to learn the truth will take him halfway around the world to an epic showdown with his family’s ghosts.
A marriage story, a search for meaning in the wake of the Holocaust, and a struggle to release the weight of ancestral trauma, "Death Trip" takes readers from the ayahuasca basements of Portland’s psychedelic underground to the streets and alleyways of Budapest in the darkest days of World War II. By turns wrenching and hilarious, it asks "can trauma be inherited" and, if so, "can psychedelics help us heal?"

He thought the nightmare was over, but nearly twenty years later, "the most terrible Mafioso in Ukraine" was back.

This book is not just a memoir but a confession. In 1994, author Sergey Maidukov accepted an "exciting business offer" from Samvel Martirosyan, later renowned as one of the most brutal and indomitable leaders of the Ukrainian Mafia. Maidukov quickly discovered that his job as "president" of a newly created business was actually a front for Mafia activities. Despite regular attempts to extricate himself, he was told that it was too late in no uncertain terms. Thus ensued five adrenaline-fueled years in a long-term apprenticeship with the Mafia underground.

Deadly Bonds: Five Years Inside the Ukrainian Mafia provides a deep look at the Mafia family that dominated the twentieth century post-Soviet state and how it brewed conditions of economic, political, and moral catastrophe.

In 1923, journalist and budding fiction writer Ernest Hemingway penned eighteen original short stories and published them in the magazine The Little Review with the help of his friend Ezra Pound. Hemingway would later add to this collection and re-publish the stories in 1925 under the same title and - after adding an additional story - would again republish the entire volume in 1930, again as "in our time" (all in lower case). This collection of short stories would mark one of the most auspicious and earth-shattering debuts by an author in literary history and also introduced the world to the fictional character of Nick Adams, a protagonist Hemingway would re-visit repeatedly in his career. Hemingway's success with this collection - considered a masterpiece - would soon lead to the creation of his first, full-length novel "The Sun Also Rises," which chronicles the journey of a group of young, hard-drinking expatriates as they travel from France to Spain and back again. This groundbreaking book explores their lives, their aspirations and their romantic entanglements, set against a backdrop of 1920's post-war Europe and Spain's thrilling (and troubling) national sport: bullfighting. Within a few years, Hemingway would become known as one of the most important voices of his generation and his stark prose - lean and brutal at times - would be imitated by generations of writers who followed him. Presented here is the expanded 1925 edition of "In our time" as well as the full manuscript of "The Sun Also Rises." Both volumes are as they were originally published and appear in this double-set entirely unabridged.

Courage meets crisis in a doctor's extraordinary true account on the frontlines of maternal healthcare during a deadly epidemic in Sierra Leone.
In May 2014, as the country grapples with the highest maternal mortality rate globally, a new, invisible threat emerges: Ebola.
Dr Benjamin Black finds himself at the centre of the outbreak. From the life-and-death decisions on the maternity ward to moral dilemmas in the Ebola Treatment Centres, every moment is a crossroads at which a single choice could tip the balance between survival and catastrophe. The tension is palpable, and the stakes are unimaginably high. One mistake, one error of judgment, could spell disaster.
Belly Woman is a powerful piece of reportage and advocacy that draws parallels between two global outbreaks of infectious diseases: Ebola and COVID-19. Black's firsthand experience on the frontlines of a global health crisis bears witness to the raw emotions, tough decisions, such as the need to carry out medically-mandated abortions to save lives, and the unwavering dedication that defines the lives of those who step up when the world needs them most.
Compelling for readers with an interest in medical memoirs, social justice and humanitarianism, as well as healthcare professionals and maternal health caregivers.
