Beschreibung

In "The Pentecost of Calamity," Owen Wister crafts a vivid narrative that intertwines themes of existential crisis, societal upheaval, and moral resilience in the face of adversity. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century America, the novel employs a rich literary style characterized by Wister's masterful use of dialogue and descriptive prose that brings the characters and their struggles to life. The literary context of the time—marked by rapid modernization and the disintegration of traditional values—serves as both a catalyst and a crucible for the characters' transformations throughout the story. Owen Wister, renowned as a precursor to Western literature, drew from his personal experiences and observations of American society to write this seminal work. The author, who was deeply influenced by his encounters with the American West and the cultural tensions of his era, reflects on themes of calamity and redemption that resonate throughout his oeuvre. His background as a member of the educated elite, grappling with the burgeoning modern world, undoubtedly shaped the philosophical underpinnings of this novel. Readers are encouraged to delve into "The Pentecost of Calamity" not just for its engaging plot, but for its profound exploration of human resilience amidst chaos. Wister's work invites reflection on the complexities of moral choices in times of crisis, making it a timeless read for those interested in the intersections of literature and the socio-cultural landscape.

Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, better known as Caligula, served as the third Roman Emperor from 37 to 41 AD. Born into the illustrious Julio-Claudian dynasty, he was the son of Germanicus, a beloved Roman general, and Agrippina the Elder, Augustus' granddaughter. His lineage placed him firmly within the first reigning family of the Roman Empire, setting the stage for his eventual rise to power.
The Roman Empire had already undergone significant transitions by the time Caligula entered the world. Tiberius, his great-uncle, succeeded Augustus as emperor in 14 AD, adopting Germanicus as his son. Caligula’s early years were shaped by the Roman military campaigns under Germanicus in Germania, where he earned the nickname “Caligula,” meaning “little boot,” due to the small military boots he wore as a child during these campaigns with his father’s troops.
When Germanicus died under mysterious circumstances in Antioch in 19 AD, Caligula’s family was plunged into turmoil. Agrippina, now a widow, returned to Rome with her six children, only to become embroiled in a bitter conflict with Tiberius. Her family’s tragic fall resulted in the deaths or exile of most of her children, leaving Caligula as the only surviving male. In 26 AD, Tiberius withdrew to the island of Capri, where he lived in seclusion. Caligula followed him in 31 AD, and after Tiberius' death in 37 AD, Caligula ascended to the throne as emperor.

The fascinating—and often secret—history of the body's most fascinating system: the gut.

The stomach is notoriously outspoken. It growls, gurgles, and grumbles while other organs remain silent, inconspicuous, and content. For centuries humans have puzzled over this rowdy organ, deliberating on the extent of its influence over cognition, mental wellbeing, and emotions, and wondering how the gut became so central to our sense of self.

Traveling from ancient Greece to Victorian England, eighteenth-century France to modern America, historian Elsa Richardson leads us on a tour of the gut, exploring all the ways that we have imagined, theorized, and probed the mysteries of the gastroenterological system. We'll meet a diverse cast of characters including Edwardian body builders, hunger-striking suffragettes, demons, medieval alchemists, and one poor teenage girl plagued by a remarkably vocal gut, all united by this singular organ.

Engaging, eye-opening, and thought-provoking, Rumbles leaves no stone unturned, scrutinizing religious tracts and etiquette guides, satirical cartoons and political pamphlets, in its quest to answer the millennia-old question: Are we really ruled by our stomachs?
