Sinopsis

"Nothing like this book has been seen before, either in our language or in any other. We should rejoice that such brilliance exists in Welsh writing." – Pennar Davies, Welsh literary critic
"Owain Owain's The Last Day transcends the confines of its form and should captivate a fresh generation of readers with this English translation." – Joshua Rees, Buzz Magazine
The Last Day is more than a moving call to arms for speakers of minority languages facing extinction; at its core, it's a tragic human-scale story played out between the few figures who could have stopped the madness before it was too late. It is, moreover, a meditation on themes like free will, artificial intelligence and the socio-historical processes that contribute towards the death of a nation. These themes are as relevant now – if not more so – as they were when the novel was written.
With science fiction tropes recalling Philip K. Dick, Kurt Vonnegut and more recently Olga Ravn's The Employees, philosophical reflections in the vein of Dostoyevsky's Notes From the Underground, and its postmodern form, The Last Day is a testament to the depth and creativity of Welsh literature. Its translation into English is long overdue.

Aisling Keane is an investigator with the secretive spy organization known as Dragonfly. Thrust unexpectedly into the field, she and her mechanical dragon partner are surrounded by danger and intrigue.

Aisling thought she'd been hired to be a secret agent—then found that Dragonfly required new recruits, even skilled witches like her, to prove themselves. One clue leads to the next, and she's assigned to work with Lance Stone on a mission. Small crimes herald larger ones, and the larger ones suggest a mysterious organization lurking in the shadows. When an ally turns into an enemy, Dragonfly has to send a new agent into the field. The mission is simple: infiltrate, discover, and escape. But in the secretive world of international crime, nothing is ever really simple. And simple never meant easy.

Fortunately, Aisling's newest creation of technology and magic—a mechanical dragon about the size of an eagle—has just been improved by her infomancer coworker and given a cutting-edge artificial intelligence. Cait's little sister will need all the help Shimmer can provide. Despite the workload, she'll still need to find time for family and her coven. A danger is on the horizon, and the coven's guardian is worried. Will it get in the way of Aisling's new job? The investigator-turned-agent wouldn't have it any other way.

Before wars are won, they must be witnessed.Elize Janview is a soldier, one of the few survivors of an unimaginably terrible weapon, which ended the long détente between the North and the South and plunged them back into all-out war. She enlisted with a dream of finding those responsible, of somehow getting revenge for the deaths of everyone she knew, but was posted to guard the prison at Crag, the fortress of the South, which has never fallen to the enemy.Janview's life is transformed when a rough wooden box is delivered to Crag, holding the performer and spy Marius Mondegreen, agent of the North: the Misheard Word, who can read minds, breathe fire, and make objects appear and disappear. Janview is to witness Mondegreen's interrogation by his captor, the beautiful and cruel Allynx Syld, who promises the end of the war. As recorder–and by degrees participant–in the interrogation, Janview comes to question everything she knew about the war, and the very world she lives in . . .

Searching for redemption in the shifting realm between the human and fae worlds, not-so-reformed fae steward Athelas seems likely instead to find death, dismemberment, and deadly magic . . .

Exiled, excommunicated, and with a bounty on his head, Athelas is lying low in Seoul for exactly one reason: he has a wedding to attend. Whether or not he's welcome is another matter.

Luckily for Athelas, several bodies have turned up with their soft insides gnawed out, whether by magic or Behindkind—and the latest of those bodies is at the very wedding hall he has been staking out. The Behindkind investigators suspect one of Athelas's housemates: YeoWoo, a gumiho with a thirst for revenge and an even greater appetite for soft underbelly than Athelas. To buy herself time, YeoWoo barters alibis with the suspiciously quiet fae sharing her house, but to remain free, she must find the real murderer.

By joining the investigation, Athelas has exactly the chance he needs to prove that he is now a repentant, changed, and selfless fae, bent on atoning for former deeds . . . no matter how many Behindkind and humans he has to cut through to confirm that impression.

Simon Grue found a two-inch mermaid in his bathtub. It had arms, hips, a finny tail, and (here the real trouble began) a face that reminded him irresistibly of the girl next door. Simon at first thought his roommate had been smoking some strange stuff in that bubble pipe of his and the fumes was causing the odd delusion. But when he saw another and the tiny thing flopped out onto the floor gasping for breath, it was then that Simon Grue seriously began to wonder what the Russians were doing on the roof next door. From this start, the story just gets weirder and more fun. A great listen but be warned, your mind will still be a bit dizzy when it is finished.
