Summary

In the Longsellers collection, you will find the most read and loved books of all time.

Published in 1890, The Picture of Dorian Gray, became a classic whenever we talk about about the superficial nature of social relationships and escapism through beauty and art.

The story is about Dorian Gray, a young man of high society, who makes a dark pact to have eternal youth while the painting with his portrait ages. Over time, his life of immoralities and abuses turns the picture into a monster. Wilde's only novel, it was subject to much controversy and criticism in its time but has come to be recognized as a classic of gothic literature.

Oscar Wilde was famous in the 1890s for his very popular plays. Wilde, who was homosexual, would also become known for being prosecuted for "indecent behavior," a charge for which he was convicted and imprisoned between the years 1895 and 1897.

This book also contains the essays Art And Morality, by Stuart Mason, and Biographical Summary, by Arthur Ransome. With this extra content the reader will find a greater understanding of the personal life, the historical context, and the polemics of this great author.

We hope you'll love this book as much we do, and don't forget to check the rest of the collection for more beloved classics.

In MAN'S LAST SONG, Tam’s first full-length novel the human race faces imminent extinction. The year is 2090. The global population has shrunk to less than half a million; median age about sixty. After forty years of near-universal sterility, humanity is vanishing while the rest of the planet makes a healthy comeback. A few survivors in Hong Kong face the challenge of adjusting to life as post-modern savages, rediscovering instincts that have long been suppressed by civilization. To these post-modern cavemen and cavewomen dwelling in the concrete remains of an empty metropolis, life has become a lonely journey of self-discovery in which they reassess also mankind. Their relationships with nature, each other, and themselves have fundamentally changed. The dilemma, pain and pleasure of love, friendship, compassion, ageing, and loneliness have been heightened by pragmatic dictates. The unknowable - God, Dao, death, even reality - has assumed new and shifting dimensions in man's dying world. How did Homo sapiens reach this dire situation? Looking back with hindsight borrowed from the future, readers may join characters in this book in finding today's world absurd, even suicidal. Others may hang on tenaciously to one thing that has not changed: hope.
The author, JAMES TAM, was born in Hong Kong. He lived and studied in Canada in the 70s and returned to Hong Kong in the mid-80s to work as an environmental engineer and started his own environmental engineering practice. In 2008, he realised his long-term plan to leave business before too late, and sat down to write. As a scientific realist often mistaken for a morbid cynic, he sees abundant evidence that 21st Century Homo sapiens is a delusional and self-endangered species. Nevertheless, he remains irrationally optimistic.

Living Space by Isaac Asimov - Having mastered probability lanes, man found an indefinite number of Earths—and everyone could have a planet all to himself, if he wanted. But there was one joker in the deal...
Clarence Rimbro had no objections to living in the only house on an uninhabited planet, any more than had any other of Earth’s even trillion of inhabitants.
If someone had questioned him concerning possible objections, he would undoubtedly have stared blankly at the questioner. His house was much larger than any house could possibly be on Earthproper, and much more modern. It had its independent air-supply and water-supply; ample food in its freezing compartments. It was isolated from the lifeless planet on which it was located by a force-field, but the rooms were built about a five-acre farm (under glass, of course) which, in the planet’s beneficient sunlight, grew flowers for pleasure and vegetables for health. It even supported a few chickens. It gave Mrs. Rimbro something to do with herself afternoons, and a place for the two little Rimbros to play when they were tired of indoors.
Furthermore, if one wanted to be on Earth-proper; if one insisted on it; if one had to have people around, and air one could breathe in the open, or water to swim in — one had only to go out of the front door of the house.
    So where was the difficulty?
