Synopsis

A ghost. A family. A curse—and a twist only Oscar Wilde could deliver.

The Canterville Ghost is a delightful fusion of gothic horror and satire, penned by Oscar Wilde with his trademark humor and social insight. When a brash American family moves into a haunted English manor, they're unimpressed by the ghostly antics of Sir Simon de Canterville—who, in turn, is equally baffled by their irreverence.

Beneath the laughs and spectral encounters lies a touching story of forgiveness, love, and the unexpected humanity of a restless spirit.

This annotated and illustrated edition includes historical context, Wildean analysis, and period artwork—ideal for students, families, and lovers of classic supernatural fiction.

"A rare blend of wit and melancholy—Oscar Wilde at his most playful and profound." — The Times Literary Supplement
"Wilde turns the ghost story upside down and makes it his own." — The Guardian

Prolific in many genres, he wrote dozens of novels, short stories, and works of social commentary, history, satire, biography and autobiography. His work also included two books on recreational war games. Wells is now best remembered for his science fiction novels and is often called the "father of science fiction", along with Jules Verne and the publisher Hugo Gernsback.

Booker Taliaferro Washington (April 5, 1856 - November 14, 1915) was an American educator, author, orator, and adviser to several presidents of the United States. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African American community and of the contemporary black elite. Washington was from the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of the former slaves and their descendants. They were newly oppressed in the South by disenfranchisement and the Jim Crow discriminatory laws enacted in the post-Reconstruction Southern states in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
THE VIRTUE OF SIMPLICITY: I hope that you all paid strict attention to what Mr. William H. Baldwin, Jr., who recently spoke to you, had to say. In the few words that he spoke, I think he told you the platform upon which this institution has been built.

War and Peace is a literary work mixed with chapters on history and philosophy by the Russian author Leo Tolstoy. It was first published serially, then published in its entirety in 1869. It is regarded as one of Tolstoy's finest literary achievements and remains an internationally praised classic of world literature.
First Epilogue: 1813-20: Seven years had passed. The storm-tossed sea of European history had subsided within its shores and seemed to have become calm. But the mysterious forces that move humanity (mysterious because the laws of their motion are unknown to us) continued to operate.

This is a collection of translations of six short stories of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore.  These six short stories are selected from his book ‘Galpaguchha’.  The stories are, 'Alive and Dead' (Jeebita o Mreeta), 'Suva', 'The First Look' (Shuvadrishti), 'Hoimantee', ‘Letter from Your Wife' (Streer Patra) and 'The Anonymous Lady' (Aparichita). I have selected these stories, because first of all I enjoyed reading these stories and secondly all these six stories are concerned about the position of women in the family and in the society at that time, that is, during the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century.
These stories depict the vulnerability of women, their lack of control over their marriage and life as a whole.  Show a glimpse of life of another time and of another culture. The line of thinking may seem much different from today’s life, but in many parts of the world still there are some people who like to suppress the rights of women in the name of religion or culture. So, these stories are still relevant.
Excerpts from Alive and Dead, Kadambinee cannot tolerate any more, she says sharply, ‘Oh, please, I didn’t die, did not die!  How will I make you understand that I didn’t die? Let me show you that I am alive.’
From Hoimantee, ‘My life was so full to the brim on all sides, that I could not notice any gap anywhere.  Suddenly, I witnessed a large void of hopelessness so near me!  I couldn’t understand how and with what I would fill up this void.’
From Letter from Your Wife, Mreenal, ‘I can never understand the logic behind that it’s okay not to please me, but it’s not okay to make you unhappy.’
