Summary

Transatlantic Migration Trends explores the extensive movement of people from Europe to the Americas, fundamentally altering the cultural and socioeconomic landscapes of both continents. The book examines various waves of European migration, from the 17th century onward, revealing how industrialization, political upheaval, and shifting immigration policies influenced these flows. A key insight is the nuanced understanding of migration patterns, challenging simple narratives and illuminating the complexities of human experience across different eras. The book uses historical census data and immigrant narratives to paint a comprehensive picture of transatlantic migration.

It begins by analyzing early colonial movements and forced migrations, then delves into the mass migrations of the 19th century, driven by factors like famine and political turmoil. Later chapters address the shifts in migration patterns during the 20th and 21st centuries, considering the impact of world wars and globalization. This approach provides a balanced analysis of migration from both the European and American perspectives, making it a valuable resource for students, scholars, and anyone interested in world history and social science.

A practical guide to help authors authentically write and edit a character whose identity is different than their own. Do you have the tools to authentically write and edit a character whose identity is different than your own? It’s not a subject that’s generally taught in creative writing programs, and there are so few craft books and online resources on the subject. Even if you can take a seminar, class, or workshop, there’s nothing like having an easy-to-understand book on hand to provide guidance and insight every time you craft characters with historically marginalized identities. In Writing an Identity Not Your Own, award-winning author Alex Temblador discusses one of the most contentious topics in creative writing: crafting a character whose identity is historically marginalized. What is “identity,” and how do unconscious biases and bias blocks impact and influence what we write? What is intersectionality? You’ll learn about identity terms, stereotypes, and tropes, and receive genre-specific advice related to various identities to consider when writing different races and ethnicities, sexual and romantic orientations, gender identities, disabilities, nationalities, and more. Through writing strategies, exercises, and literary excerpts, writers will gain a clearer understanding on how misrepresentations and harmful portrayals can appear in storylines, dialogue, and characterization. Alex will guide writers from the brainstorming phase through the editing process so they can gain a full understanding of the complexities of writing other identities and why it’s important to get them right.

    Formation of the United Nations...

On November 29, 1943, as the Allies’ primary leaders met in Tehran, Roosevelt described to Stalin his idea for the organization that would become the United Nations. The American president suggested that the active arm of the organization be “the Four Policemen”: the U.S., USSR, UK, and China. Stalin agreed with much of the framework in principle, but asserted that China likely would not possess the strength after the war to assist. He also noted that the “Policemen” must hold a series of strong points, putting Germany and Japan at too much of a disadvantage to attempt military adventurism again. Roosevelt, eager to please his “friend,” agreed with everything Stalin said.
That exchange might be considered the origin of the United Nations, one of the most famous bodies in the world, but the concept was already in existence in the form of its predecessor, the League of Nations. At the end of World War I, President Woodrow Wilson's pleas at the Paris Peace Conference relied on his Fourteen Points, which included the establishment of a League of Nations, but while his points were mostly popular amongst Americans and Europeans alike, leaders at the conference largely discarded them and favored different approaches. British leaders saw their singular aim as the maintenance of British colonial possessions. France, meanwhile, only wanted to ensure that Germany was weakened and unable to wage war again, and it too had colonial interests abroad that it hoped to maintain. Britain and France thus saw eye-to-eye, with both wanting a weaker Germany and both wanting to maintain their colonies. Wilson, however, wanted both countries to rid themselves of their colonies, and he wanted Germany to maintain its self-determination and right to self-defense. Wilson totally opposed the “war guilt” clause, which blamed the war on Germany.
