Sinopsis

"Food as Medicine" presents a comprehensive exploration of how nutrition fundamentally impacts human health, bridging traditional wisdom with cutting-edge nutritional science. The book systematically examines the intricate relationship between food and wellness, focusing on how specific nutrients influence cellular function and immune response. Through evidence-based research and clinical studies, it demonstrates how dietary choices can either promote healing or contribute to disease processes, particularly through their effects on inflammation.

The book's unique three-part structure guides readers from theoretical foundations to practical applications. Beginning with the biochemical interactions between nutrients and human physiology, it progresses through detailed analyses of how specific dietary patterns can address various health conditions. The work stands out for its thorough examination of both macronutrients and micronutrients at the cellular level, supported by peer-reviewed research from leading medical institutions. Particularly compelling are the included case studies that demonstrate real-world applications of nutritional interventions in clinical settings.

The final section transforms scientific insights into actionable strategies, providing readers with practical tools for implementing food-based healing approaches. While maintaining scientific rigor, the book remains accessible to both healthcare professionals and informed consumers, offering clear explanations of complex concepts without resorting to oversimplified conclusions. The work carefully balances the potential of dietary interventions with conventional medical treatments, positioning nutrition as a complementary approach to health maintenance and disease management rather than a replacement for traditional medical care.

The pinnacle of orchid hunting activity was in the nineteenth century when prices for individual plants reached astonishing levels. Such were the profits to be made that many of the most active orchid hunters were directly employed by orchid nurseries in Britain and Europe. These were not the aristocratic administrators of empire; they were trained gardeners and horticulturalists who had a yearning to travel and see for themselves where the plants they nurtured had come from. In this book we explore the activities of these orchid hunters through the years, from the eighteenth century right into the twenty-first century, when the camera replaced the axe and spade. Many of these stories are rarely told in the context of the society that demanded ever bigger and more flamboyant orchids. Some were collected and the sites they had come from forgotten. Some were so valuable that the sites were kept secret, or misleading information given about their origin, even the wrong country being suggested for some. Orchid hunting was not always safe and some collectors never came home. Of those that did return, contemporary documents suggest that some of the stories they came back with enhanced the value of their plants, but were not always entirely accurate in their details. Using original documents as source material, for the first time tales of orchids lost and found, as well as those that sought them, are told in their entirety.

It should have been Rebecca Schiller's dream come true: moving her young family to the English countryside to raise goats and coax their own fruit and vegetables from the land. But, as she writes: The summer of striding out toward a life of open fields and sacks of corn, I brought a confused black hole of something pernicious but not yet acknowledged along for the ride.

Rebecca's health begins to crumble, with bewildering symptoms: frequent falls, uncontrollable rages, and mysterious lapses in memory. As she fights to be seen by specialists, her fledgling homestead—and her family—hang by increasingly tenuous threads. And when her diagnosis finally comes, it is utterly unexpected: severe ADHD.

In her scramble for answers, Rebecca's consciousness alternately sears with pinpoint focus and spirals with connections. Childhood memories resurface with new meaning, and her daily life entwines with the history of women who tended this land before her. Her family weathers their growing pains where generations of acorns have fallen to rise again as trees, where ancient wolves and lynx once stalked the shadows. Written in unsparing, luminous prose, this is an all-absorbing memoir of one woman's newfound neurodivergence—and a clarion call to overturn the narrative that says minds are either normal and good or different and broken.
