Sinopsis

Taste Bud Mechanics explores the fascinating science behind our sense of taste, diving into how taste receptors on our tongues detect flavors and transmit this information to the brain. The book uncovers the intricate molecular biology of taste, explaining how we perceive sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami. Notably, individual differences in taste perception are significantly influenced by genetics, as evidenced by the TAS2R gene family that affects our sensitivity to bitter compounds, revealing why some people are more averse to certain foods than others. The book meticulously maps the neural pathways involved in taste, from the initial activation of taste receptor cells to the higher cortical areas responsible for taste perception and emotional responses. By integrating findings from molecular biology, neuroscience, and genetics, it provides a holistic view of how our taste preferences and aversions are shaped. Beginning with the basic anatomy and physiology of the taste system, the book progresses to the neurobiology of taste and culminates in an exploration of the genetic determinants of taste variation. This unique approach bridges the gap between scientific research and everyday experience, making the complexities of taste accessible to a broad audience.

This volume explores how rival dynasties, religious authorities, and expanding empires shaped the geopolitical and cultural map of the Middle Ages.
Begin with The Investiture Controversy, the clash between the Church and monarchs over who held the authority to appoint bishops. This power struggle between emperors and popes tested the boundaries between secular and spiritual rule and laid the foundation for modern concepts of church-state relations.
Move next to The Reconquista, the centuries-long campaign to reclaim the Iberian Peninsula from Muslim rule. Fueled by religious fervor and royal ambition, this protracted conflict transformed Spain and Portugal and culminated in the powerful Catholic monarchies that would launch the Age of Exploration.
Then explore The Norman Conquest, a pivotal event that redefined English history. William the Conqueror's triumph at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 not only shifted the English throne but also reshaped the culture, language, and law of the British Isles.
Finally, journey to The Norman Sicily, where Norman adventurers established a multicultural kingdom blending Latin, Greek, and Arab traditions. This dynamic realm became a beacon of learning and tolerance during a time of widespread division.
These four works together uncover the complex web of ambition, religion, and warfare that fueled Europe's transformation during the Middle Ages.

"That government is best which governs least" is the famous opening line of this essay. The slavery crisis inflamed New England in the 1840s and 1850s. The environment became especially tense after the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. A lifelong abolitionist, Thoreau delivered an impassioned speech which would later become Civil Disobedience in 1848, just months after leaving Walden Pond. The speech dealt with slavery, but at the same time excoriated American imperialism, particularly the Mexican–American War. Thoreau asserts that because governments are typically more harmful than helpful, they therefore cannot be justified. Democracy is no cure for this, as majorities simply by virtue of being majorities do not also gain the virtues of wisdom and justice. The judgment of an individual's conscience is not necessarily inferior to the decisions of a political body or majority, and so "[i]t is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right. The only obligation which I have a right to assume is to do at any time what I think right.... Law never made men a whit more just; and, by means of their respect for it, even the well-disposed are daily made the agents of injustice." He adds, "I cannot for an instant recognize as my government [that] which is the slave's government also.

    Darkest Christmas - December...

December 1942 saw the bloodiest Christmas in the history of mankind. Men were killing each other in greater numbers than ever before. The Holocaust continued, and innocent civilians were murdered by the thousands throughout the evil Nazi empire, even as the perpetrators celebrated the birth of Christ.

Millions stationed in far-off lands amid the greatest conflict in human history feared this was their last Christmas in freedom, or their last Christmas alive. At the same time as the slaughter continued unabated, throughout the world there were random acts of kindness. These gestures also straddled religious barriers and sometimes included those of non-Christian faiths.

At the same time, Christmas 1942 saw the injunction of "good will to man" distorted in ugly and callous ways. In Berlin, Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels spent time with his family while still buried in feverish fantasies about the Jewish world conspiracy.

Christmas 1942 saw the entire range of man's conduct towards his fellow man, reflecting the extremes of behavior, good and bad, that World War II gave rise to. The way the holiday was marked around the world tells a deeper, more universal story of the human condition.

Originally published in 1918 by the Talbot Press in Dublin, two years after his execution by the British Government for his involvement in the 1916 Easter Rising, Some Poems of Roger Casement has long been a collector's item. In life and in death, Roger Casement appears to contain many contradictions: decorated British diplomat, Irish Protestant and martyred Irish nationalist. He was a humanitarian, essayist and sometime poet, a public gentleman and a private lover.
Over the years, Roger Casement's ghost has been the subject of endless controversies, co-opted into both the queer liberation movement in Ireland and the Republican movement. Predator or saviour, traitor or hero, maligned martyr or gay icon? The question depends on who you ask, and what aspects of Casement's life they choose to hold in focus, or to dismiss as a lie. —SEÁN HEWITT
Includes a specially commissioned introduction by Seán Hewitt as well as the original 1918 introduction, written by Casement's cousin, Gertrude Parry.
