Summary

In today's image-saturated world, Photography Ethics provides a vital guide to navigating the complex moral issues surrounding photography. The book tackles pressing questions, such as privacy concerns in documentary work and the ethical implications of digital manipulation, equipping photographers, photo editors, and consumers to critically assess visual media. A core theme emphasizes prioritizing ethical considerations in every photographic decision, urging constant engagement with the potential impact of images.

The book explores the historical evolution of photography ethics and its connection to moral philosophy. Divided into three sections, it first establishes a theoretical foundation, applying concepts like utilitarianism to photographic scenarios. The second section investigates specific ethical challenges across various genres, including photojournalism and wildlife photography. The third examines post-processing and image manipulation, differentiating between enhancement and distortion.

Through case studies and real-world examples, Photography Ethics encourages critical thinking, rather than prescribing rigid rules. It acknowledges the ongoing debate about objectivity in photography, emphasizing transparency and respect. By fostering ethical awareness, the book empowers readers to make informed decisions upholding truth, fairness, and respect.

The early history of Earth covers such vast stretches of time that years, centuries, and even millennia become virtually meaningless. Instead, paleontologists and scientists who study geochronology divide time into periods and eras.
What humans commonly refer to as the “Ice Age” is actually a series of fluctuating climate events that have occurred throughout the planet’s history. These ongoing historical phenomena are difficult to conceptualize because of both the time frame involved and the natural process by which they cyclically unfold. The Earth’s climatic clock repeats the maneuver over millions of years per occurrence, a number that is intellectually graspable, but not viscerally well-perceivable by most members of the human race. The process by which ice ages form is not relevant to any societal function, and therefore remains a mystery. Those who attempt to define it are often met with either apathy or defiant superstition.
As a basic definition, it may be said that an ice age is simply a period of time during which thick ice sheets cover vast areas of land. These sheets have advanced and retreated, at times taking over the entire planet, and conversely disappearing nearly altogether. Glacial ice formed by this regularly occurring process does not sit in a state of inertia, but moves dynamically, reshaping the geological features of the continents. Again, the time frame for glacial movement is far longer than any involving human activity, so close attention must be paid in order to correctly measure and interpret it for the modern day.

A rich, penetrating memoir about the author's relationship with a flawed but influential figure—the painter Lucian Freud—and the satisfactions and struggles of a life lived through art.

One of Britain's most important contemporary painters, Celia Paul has written a reflective, intimate memoir of her life as an artist. Self-Portrait tells the artist's story in her own words, drawn from early journal entries as well as memory, of her childhood in India and her days as a art student at London's Slade School of Fine Art; of her intense decades-long relationship with the older esteemed painter Lucian Freud and the birth of their son; of the challenges of motherhood, the unresolvable conflict between caring for a child and remaining committed to art; of the "invisible skeins between people," the profound familial connections Paul communicates through her paintings of her mother and sisters; and finally, of the mystical presence in her own solitary vision of the world around her.

Self-Portrait is a powerful, liberating evocation of a life and of a life-long dedication to art.

    Contains mature themes.

The Pala Empire emerged in the eastern regions of the Indian subcontinent during the eighth century, marking the beginning of a powerful dynasty that would shape the cultural and political landscape of Bengal and Bihar for nearly four centuries. The empire was established in a period of political fragmentation and instability following the decline of the earlier Gupta Empire and the subsequent rule of smaller, competing kingdoms. This power vacuum set the stage for the rise of a strong and centralized authority under the leadership of Gopala, the first ruler of the Pala dynasty.
Gopala's ascent to power is believed to have been unique for the time, as he was reportedly chosen by local chieftains and influential figures through a process of election, rather than simply inheriting his position through lineage. This suggests that his leadership was recognized as a unifying force in a region that had suffered from prolonged disorder and internal conflicts. Once in power, Gopala took significant steps to stabilize his realm, laying the foundation for what would become one of the most enduring dynasties in Indian history. He consolidated his rule over Bengal and expanded his influence into neighboring territories, establishing control over strategic trade routes and fertile agricultural lands that contributed to the empire’s prosperity.
Gopala’s son, Dharmapala, proved to be an even more ambitious ruler. Under his leadership, the Pala Empire reached its zenith, with its influence stretching far beyond Bengal into northern and central India. Dharmapala was not only a military leader but also a great patron of Buddhism, playing a crucial role in the expansion of Buddhist institutions, including the famed Nalanda University. His military campaigns brought him into direct conflict with two of the other major powers of the time, the Gurjara-Pratiharas and the Rashtrakutas.

Hollywood and MAGA don’t get along. There are plenty of right wingers who won’t even touch this book because "Hollywood" is on the cover. Meanwhile, there are plenty of snowflake leftists who are fighting back tears because they assume this book is propaganda from “orange Thanos” to take over Tinseltown. And then there’s you, the American. Conservative or liberal, you realize that Hollywood and MAGA are at war with each other and that it’s a battle worth examining. Make Hollywood Great Again navigates through 2017 – 2020’s theatrical releases examining journalism, conspiracy and the media, as well as a bevy of other topics. Filmmakers have addressed their undesired tenet in the White House through a variety of stories, mostly non-fiction. The book privileges The Post, Blackkklansman, The Front Runner, Dark Waters, Richard Jewell, and The Hunt among others.
