Sinopse

In "Thoughts on South Africa," Olive Schreiner presents a profound reflection on the socio-political landscape of South Africa in the late 19th century. This work transcends the simplicity of travel writing, integrating elements of social critique and philosophical discourse. Schreiner's narrative is marked by her introspective and lyrical prose, rendering the complexities of colonialism, race relations, and the human condition in vivid detail. Through her keen observations, she offers not just a critique of her contemporaries but also an early feminist voice questioning the status quo in a rapidly changing society. Olive Schreiner, a pioneering figure in feminist literature and a committed advocate for social justice, wrote this book against the backdrop of her own experiences as a South African settler. Her deep concern for the plight of marginalized communities and her commitment to discussing the psychological effects of colonial rule inform her insights in this work. Schreiner's unique perspective as a woman writer in a patriarchal society enriches her analysis, making it a significant contribution to both South African literature and feminist thought. Recommended for scholars, students, and anyone interested in the interplay of race, gender, and politics in colonial contexts, "Thoughts on South Africa" is an essential read. Schreiner's engaging prose and critical perspective provoke thoughtful dialogue about the legacies of colonialism and the ongoing struggle for equality, marking this book as a timeless and essential resource for understanding the complexities of South African identity.

In 1989, the Little Rascals Day Care in Edenton, North Carolina, was suddenly thrust into the national spotlight. One day, the owner's husband disciplined a boy at naptime, and soon an angry mother suggested that it was more than just a slap. Rumors quickly morphed into charges of unimaginable crimes against dozens of little children. Panic consumed the town, as the police, therapists, and parents relentlessly pressured the children who attended the day care to name their teachers responsible for multiple allegations of abuse. The Edenton Seven were caught up in the accusations, including nineteen-year-old teacher Robin Boles Byrum. She spent nearly a year in jail under an enormous bond meant to pressure her to "tell the truth" while she had a new baby at home.
Eerily reminiscent of the hysteria that gripped Salem, Massachusetts, during the witch trials of the seventeenth century, the Little Rascals case ultimately became the longest and most expensive criminal trial in North Carolina history. Three decades later, Betsy Hester met Robin Byrum Couto and together, they joined forces to tell the truth. Betsy shares insights from legal and medical experts and reveals the facts from twenty-one boxes and bound testimonies from the courtroom long since buried away. Intertwined with the case history is Robin's never-before-told story of her harrowing journey through the court system. Finally, this book serves as a modern-day warning about the danger of mass hysteria and the consequences of a judicial system that blindly refused to hear and seek the truth.

For 30 years, much of the West looked on with disdain as the Bolsheviks took power in Russia and created and consolidated the Soviet Union. As bad as Vladimir Lenin seemed in the early 20th century, Joseph Stalin was so much worse that Churchill later remarked of Lenin, “Their worst misfortune was his birth... their next worst his death.” Before World War II, Stalin consolidated his position by frequently purging party leaders (most famously Leon Trotsky) and Red Army leaders, executing hundreds of thousands of people at the least. And in one of history’s greatest textbook examples of the idea that the enemy of my enemy is my friend, Stalin’s Soviet Union allied with Britain and the United States to defeat Hitler in Europe during World War II.
Stalin ruled with an iron fist for nearly 30 years before his death in 1953, which may or may not have been murder, just as Stalin was preparing to conduct another purge. With his death, Soviet strongman and long-time Stalinist Nikita Khrushchev (1894-1971), who had managed to stay a step ahead of Stalin’s purges if only because he participated in them, became the Soviet premier. Meanwhile, little is remembered in the public imagination about Brezhnev in comparison to Mikhail Gorbachev, Vladimir Lenin, or Joseph Stalin, despite the fact Brezhnev ruled the USSR from 1964-1982, longer than any Soviet leader other than Stalin.
After going through three elderly leaders in three years, Mikhail Gorbachev was chosen as the new General Secretary at the relatively youg age of 54 in March 1985. Gorbachev hoped to build the Soviet economy to relieve the persistent shortages of consumer goods it faced, which were caused by enormous military spending of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev tried to introduce some economic reforms, but they were blocked by communist hardliners. Gorbachev then came to the belief that the Soviet economy could not improved without political reform as well.

A little concerned that he seemed to have skipped the Norn's notice when it came to getting a mate, Norse God Loki decided to embark on a path of discovery. He believed that the Norns hadn't put a mate in his path, yet, because he didn't know much about living as a mortal. So, in the interests of learning all he could about the human experience, and following a path many mortals did, Loki employed the services of a therapist. And, sure enough, after following her directions, Loki found himself standing in front of his mate.
Let the loving and fun times begin...
Except, Anubis, Egyptian God of Mummification, Death, and Lost Souls, was having a few issues of his own. He wasn't about to reject Loki, he hadn't heard of him before, but he was too wound up in his own human experiences. They included a blond twink named Cooper, a nightclub with staff who didn't know their place, and concerns about what he'd learned regarding Osiris during his father's altercation with Seth.
Nobody had ever worked out if fated gods could live without each other, but with everything going on around them, Anubis and Loki might have to see if it was possible. Loki would only take a certain amount of being ignored before he did what he did best - Being Loki.
Being Loki is an MM paranormal romance story where Loki is described at one point as being something akin to an adorable puppy. I wouldn't write about him unless I could give him an HEA, but he and Anubis do have some fun working things out. This book is intended for adults only - please store your content responsibly.
Can be read as standalone, but reading Odin's story (Special Enough) and Seth's Story (Reconciliation) will give you more depth about the backstories.
