Summary

Plastic: Modern Material explores the complex history and pervasive impact of plastics, from their initial promise as a revolutionary technology to their current status as a major environmental concern. This book traces the evolution of plastic polymers, highlighting how inventions like celluloid and Bakelite led to the mass production of these materials. It examines the ecological consequences of plastic pollution, including the proliferation of microplastics and the challenges of effective recycling, while also detailing how global supply chains and consumer culture contribute to our dependency on this modern material.

The book critically assesses the environmental impacts of plastic waste, revealing alarming data on its effects on ecosystems, wildlife, and even human health. Did you know that plastics accumulate in ocean gyres, forming massive floating garbage patches? Or that microplastics are now found in everything from seafood to drinking water?

Plastic: Modern Material adopts a holistic approach, blending historical analysis with scientific rigor and policy recommendations. Structured in three parts, the book first covers the history of plastics, then delves into environmental impacts, and finally examines socio-economic aspects of plastic dependency, offering solutions for a more sustainable future.

Create a Gospel-Centered Rule of Life
Habits form us more than we form them. The modern world is a machine of invisible habits, forming us into anxious, busy people. We yearn for the freedom of the gospel but remain shackled by our screens and exhausted by our routines. How can we truly break free, find rest, and form a life that aligns our habits with our foundational beliefs?
According to Justin Earley, the answer is a rule of life. The Common Rule's four daily and four weekly habits transform frazzled days into lives of love for God and neighbor.
In The Common Rule, you'll find

    - doable, life-giving practices to find freedom and rest for your soul,
    - expanded content including study guide questions for individual reflection and group discussion, and
    - practical, accessible resources for building habits that bring life.
Take the first step toward a life of intentionality and discover how simple, meaningful habits can transform your everyday moments into a rhythm of peace and purpose.
"Full of glimpses of the life we were made for, and the simple choices that can take us in that direction. The habits described here, and the wisdom they embody, are the path toward sanity in a frenetic world." – Andy Crouch, author of The Tech-Wise Family and Culture Making

Along with reproduction, balancing energy expenditure with the limits of resource acquisition is essential for both a species and a population to survive. But energy is a limited resource, as we know well, so birds and mammals—the most energy-intensive fauna on the planet—must reduce energy expenditures to maintain this balance, some taking small steps, and others extreme measures. Here Brian K. McNab draws on his over sixty years in the field to provide a comprehensive account of the energetics of birds and mammals, one fully integrated with their natural history. McNab begins with an overview of thermal rates—much of our own energy is spent maintaining our 98.6?F temperature—and explains how the basal rate of metabolism drives energy use, especially in extreme environments. He then explores those variables that interact with the basal rate of metabolism, like body size and scale and environments, highlighting their influence on behavior, distribution, and even reproductive output. Successive chapters take up energy and population dynamics and evolution. A critical central theme that runs through the book is how the energetic needs of birds and mammals come up against rapid environmental change and how this is hastening the pace of extinction.

People form their first impression of you—and your business—in under a second. It’s a startling thought. Fortunately, online articles have a bit more leeway. Most web pages have just under a minute to capture visitors' attention and persuade them to stay or leave.
That said, sixty seconds isn’t much time. If you need to convince a new user that your content is worth their clicks and shares, you might think brevity is key. Surprisingly, that’s not always the case. To truly stand out in a crowded digital landscape and keep users engaged, long-form articles are the way to go.

Stars in the Dark - The...

For centuries, humans have gazed into the night sky, believing that what they saw—stars, planets, glowing nebulae—was all there was. But as our tools for exploring the universe improved, scientists began to notice something strange. The visible matter in galaxies simply wasn’t enough to explain how those galaxies moved and behaved. Something unseen, something invisible, seemed to be exerting a powerful influence on everything.
In the 1930s, astronomer Fritz Zwicky was studying a group of galaxies known as the Coma Cluster. When he measured how fast the galaxies within the cluster were moving, he realized they were traveling far too quickly to be held together by the visible matter alone. According to the laws of gravity, the cluster should have torn itself apart. Zwicky proposed that some kind of “missing mass” must be present, something that added gravitational force without emitting light. He called it “dark matter.” At the time, his idea was mostly ignored.
Decades later, in the 1970s, American astronomer Vera Rubin provided even more compelling evidence. She was studying the rotation of spiral galaxies, expecting that stars farther from the center would orbit more slowly, just as planets farther from the sun move more slowly in our solar system. But that wasn’t what she found. The outer stars were moving just as fast as those closer in, a finding that didn’t make sense if only visible matter was involved. Her work suggested that some unseen material—something with mass—was surrounding the galaxies in large halos, exerting gravitational pull and affecting their motion. This was dark matter at work.
