  Carthage was one of the great ancient civilizations, and at its peak, the wealthy Carthaginian empire dominated the Mediterranean against the likes of Greece and Rome, with commercial enterprises and influence stretching from Spain to Turkey. In fact, at several points in history it had a very real chance of replacing the fledgling Roman empire or the failing Greek poleis (city-states) altogether as master of the Mediterranean. Although Carthage by far preferred to exert economic pressure and influence before resorting to direct military power (and even went so far as to rely primarily on mercenary armies paid with its vast wealth for much of its history. 
  	Despite the enmity towards Carthage held by the Greeks and Romans, they nevertheless spent centuries romanticizing and mythologizing its legendary founder, Queen Dido. It’s an established fact that the Phoenicians established a maritime empire with Tyre at the forefront in the early 1st millennium BCE, and from that, the ancients believed that a Phoenician princess named Elisa fled Tyre to North Africa after her brother killed her husband, where she managed to negotiate with local leaders for land and secure the site of Carthage, becoming Queen Dido in the process. The Romans eventually took it further by tying Troy and Carthage to Rome’s legendary founding, with Virgil’s Aeneid claiming Dido had a torrid romance with Aeneas after the Greeks sacked Troy. Ever since, Dido has been the subject of countless works of art over the past 2,000 years and counting.  
  	The story and legends of Queen Dido are among the most remarkable in antiquity, so it’s little surprise that modern historians have sought to uncover the truth, specifically whether Dido actually existed. Though she has long been dismissed as purely mythological and certainly never met Aeneas, some evidence suggests a queen truly did settle Carthage, and the settlement ultimately grew into a magnificent metropolis that quickly outshone its Phoenician roots.

It is through these encounters—indeed, through a process of assimilation—that Jews came to develop distinct local customs, speak many different languages, and cultivate diverse musical, culinary, and intellectual traditions.Left unchecked, the Jews' well-honed ability to absorb from surrounding cultures might have led to their disappearance. And yet, the route toward full and unbridled assimilation was checked by the nearly constant presence of hatred toward the Jew. Anti-Jewish expression and actions have regularly accompanied Jews throughout history. Part of the ironic success of antisemitism is its malleability, its talent in assuming new forms and portraying the Jew in diverse and often contradictory images. Antisemitism not only served to blunt further assimilation, but, in a paradoxical twist, affirmed the Jews' sense of difference from the host society. And thus together assimilation and antisemitism (at least up to a certain limit) contribute to the survival of the Jews as a highly adaptable and yet distinct group.

  Otto Heinrich Frank (May 12, 1889 - August 19, 1980) was a German businessman, and the father of Anne Frank. He edited and published the first edition of her diary in 1947 (subsequently known in English as The Diary of a Young Girl) and advised on its later theatrical and cinematic adaptations. In the 1950s and the 1960s, he established European charities in his daughter's name and founded the trust which preserved his family's wartime hiding place, the Anne Frank House, in Amsterdam.
