Summary

Let the races begin! Ruby is to be engaged to Hildebrandt, Mia’s simpleminded cousin, but her heart is set on common-born Vanos, captain of the Princess Guard—a love Mia absolutely wants to see come to fruition! So how will she break off Ruby and Hildebrandt’s engagement? With a horsemanship tournament, of course! What other way could there be?

The plan is simple: make Hildebrandt lose. Terribly. Mia knows that her cousin’s current love is horses, and being as straightforward as he is, mastering his horsemanship skills is his top priority. So, what would happen if he lost to a citizen of the Equestrian Kingdom like Aima? He’d leave Tearmoon to go study with the Equestris, obviously! Hildebrandt: gone; problem: solved. But...just where does that leave Ruby and Vanos? Is there any hope for them? And just what is the deal with this “Horse Dance”?!

James Hargrove is a math teacher who loves order, formulas, and the neat precision of his classroom. But when summer break arrives, James finds himself adrift in time and space, far from the structured world of equations he knows so well. Meanwhile, his wife Mei—a Chinese teacher with a love for poetry and pandas—embraces the season with passion, spending her days at the zoo, marveling at the simplicity and charm of her favorite black-and-white creatures.
In a dusty attic, James stumbles upon an old typewriter and unexpectedly discovers a new passion—writing. What begins as a whimsical hobby quickly evolves into The Algebraic Adventures of Archimedes Jones, a tale of a mathematician-turned-adventurer who uses his knowledge of equations to navigate magical worlds. As James pours his heart into creating realms where logic meets fantasy, he learns to let go of the rigid rules that once defined him, and to embrace the joy of imagination.
Mei becomes his greatest supporter, offering encouragement, inspiration, and plenty of suggestions—like adding a panda who knows calculus. Through their contrasting interests and shared love for each other’s passions, James and Mei discover new depths in their relationship. As his stories gain a small but devoted following, James learns that storytelling can be as powerful as teaching, and that sometimes, the most meaningful mysteries are those that can’t be solved with numbers alone.
Filled with warmth, humor, and a touch of romance, The Algebraic Adventures of Archimedes Jones is a heartwarming story about finding magic in the mundane, the beauty of contrasts, and the joy of embracing life’s unexpected adventures. It’s perfect for readers who believe that there’s room for whimsy in even the most practical lives, and that sometimes, the most profound equations are written not in chalk, but in love and laughter.

One of the few other tenants is an old German man named Erich Zann. The old man is mute and plays the viol[a] with a local theater orchestra. He lives alone on the top floor and at night he plays strange melodies the student has never heard before. Despite Zann's dissatisfaction with his own music, the student invites himself to hear Zann play at his room. While watching the first night, the student's curiosity attracts him to the window of the room, which is the only window that can oversee the wall at the end of the mysterious street. Zann seems disturbed to discover that the student is able to hear his melody from his room and asks the student in a friendly manner to move to a lower floor where he won't hear Zann's music, only to return the next day to his antisocial behavior once the student has moved...
