  The Spanish nobility continues to be influential in the early 21st century in politics, academia, and the economy. The polarized socio-cultural environment in Spain in the early decades of the millennium is paralleled by an increasingly divisive political discourse and deadlock in terms of governance. Understanding the subcultures of the most influential socio-political groups is important to be able to interpret the political developments. A vast array of studies have been conducted about the rise of the extreme left but there is a dearth of studies dealing with the impact of the traditional nobility in contemporary Spain. The present study presents an emic model of elite culture through the application of a grounded theory approach to texts released by five of the main noble associations in Spain during the last ten years. An inductive approach focuses on the identification of important themes and concepts as expressed and understood by the participants. Traditional noble associations are the focus of the study, in particular, the associations under Royal patronage. The resulting emic model aims to map the mores, norms, and values of a highly visible social group about which there are very few sociological and anthropological studies.

  "Gaslighting" is suddenly in everyone's vocabulary. It's written about, talked about, tweeted about, even sung about. It's become shorthand for being manipulated by someone who insists that up is down, hot is cold, dark is light—someone who isn't just lying about such things, but trying to drive you crazy. The term has its origins in a 1944 film in which a husband does exactly that to his wife, his crazy-making efforts symbolized by the rise and fall of the gaslights in their home. In this timely and provocative book, Kate Abramson examines gaslighting from a philosophical perspective, investigating it as a distinctive moral phenomenon. 
   
   
   
  Gaslighting, Abramson writes, is best understood as a form of interpersonal interaction, a particular way of fundamentally undermining someone. The gaslighter, Abramson argues, aims to make his target experience herself as incapable of reasoning, perceiving, or reacting in ways that would allow her to form appropriate beliefs, perceptions, or emotions in the first place. He seeks not only to induce in her this unmoored sense of herself but also to make it a reality.   “Trans rights are human rights!” “Women’s rights are human rights!” Yes, but the human rights of two groups often conflict. The only way to resolve these conflicts is through calm, rational, public debate. Freedom of expression protects the right of women to question certain demands by trans rights activists, even if this might offend. Raising conflicts between transgender rights and women’s rights is not “transphobic”, because disagreement is not hatred. The concept of “transphobia” should be defined narrowly as statements or acts indicating hostility or prejudice towards transgender persons. If the right to speak about conflicts is protected, and we start by acknowledging the broad areas of agreement about the human rights of transgender people, we can turn to the substance of these conflicts. 
    
  Should it be possible for an individual to change their legal sex? If so, how easy should it be? Should it be changeable only after a diagnosis of gender dysphoria and a waiting period? Or should it be sufficient to “self-identify” as a person of the opposite sex? Or should sex be removed from birth certificates, so that there is nothing to change?  
    
  Robert Wintemute carefully examines these conflicts, considers the differences between transgender rights and lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) rights, and proposes ways to achieve co-existence between transgender rights and women’s and children’s rights.

  Volume 1 of Three Wise Monkeys explores the Portuguese colonisation of Mozambique, and the gradual transformation of the colony into a reservoir of cheap labour, first during the Atlantic slave trade and then during the rise of the voracious Rand mining industry.
  Mozambique became locked into financial dependence on South Africa. The South African mining industry came to own significant parts of the harbour infrastructure of Lourenço Marques. The mining industry's insatiable appetite for pit props gave rise to a globalised trade in timber flowing in from the US, Scandinavia and Australia via new shipping lines to the port of Lourenço Marques.
  After World War I, the South African gold-mining industry and Mozambique's weak 'central bank', the Banco Nacional Ultramarino, operating alongside the South African Reserve Bank, a branch of the Royal Mint and the Rand Refinery, effectively controlled the economic fortunes and destiny of South Africa's neighbour. Mozambique was colonised twice over – first by Portugal and then by South Africa.
