Sinopsis

Since its publication in 1842, Dead Souls has been celebrated as a supremely realistic portrait of provincial Russian life and as a splendidly exaggerated tale; as a paean to the Russian spirit and as a remorseless satire of imperial Russian venality, vulgarity, and pomp. As Gogol's wily antihero, Chichikov, combs the back country wheeling and dealing for "dead souls"--deceased serfs who still represent money to anyone sharp enough to trade in them--we are introduced to a Dickensian cast of peasants, landowners, and conniving petty officials, few of whom can resist the seductive illogic of Chichikov's proposition.

Word to the wise, don’t marry your ex's best friend even when you promise yourself it'll just be a marriage of convenience between two friends.I did that and really wish I hadn't.At the time, I thought I was doing a good thing, helping a friend in need. In need of inheriting a large sum of money his father left for him in a trust, that was. With the stipulation of marrying before he turned twenty-five, of course.Well, Frankie Agro was single and turning twenty-five in mere weeks. So when he dropped the news in my lap, I could only see him having two options—kiss his inheritance goodbye or marry me.It made perfect sense, and the rules were simple: we live together to keep up the charade so no one is the wiser and we never, ever cross the line (aka fall in love with each other).Problem is? Being in close proximity to a handsome man who makes me laugh even when I have a bad day has my heart confused as to what this really is . . . a fake marriage. No need to tell me twice, I already know there's no way I'm walking away from this without a broken heart. Unless I can get Frankie to admit that this could be more than what it started out as. It's a risk, but one I’m willing to take.

"I glanced up but he'd already jumped, a dark blur plummeting, wings folded against the drag like some starving hawk out of the noon sun, some angel betrayed. He punched through the cab's roof so hard he sent metal shearing into the petrol tank. All it took was one spark. Boom . . ."Harry Rigby is right there, an eye-witness when Finn Hamilton walks out into the big nothing nine stories up, but no one wants to believe Finn is just the latest statistic in Ireland's silent epidemic. Not Finn's mother, Saoirse Hamilton, whose property empire is crumbling around her; and not Finn's pregnant fiancé, Maria, or his sister Grainne; and especially not Detective Tohill, the cop who believes Rigby is a stone-cold killer, a slaughter's hound with a taste for blood . . . Welcome to Harry Rigby's Sligo, where death comes dropping slow. Studded with shards of black humour and mordant wit, Slaughter's Hound is a gripping noir from one of the most innovative voices in Irish crime fiction.

This sequel to Comanche Moon is “a Texas-size love story . . . with a tough yet tender hero” (Georgina Gentry, New York Times–bestselling author of Apache Tears).   After a Comanche war party kills her husband and infant son, and makes off with her young daughter, Annie Bryce has nothing left to live for. Held captive herself by a brutal warrior, merely surviving every day is the only act of defiance she can muster.   Haunted by guilt for not preventing the Comanche attack on the Bryce family, Texas Ranger Hap Walker is surprised when he stumbles across the captive Annie three years later. Hardly recognizing the beaten down woman at first, he eventually brings her back to the “civilized” world, where she’s met with scorn and gossip by the townsfolk suspicious of her survival. Free of her bonds, Annie finds a new reason to live with the realization her daughter is still missing but alive. Hap agrees to accompany her through treacherous Indian Territory, hopeful to be a part of the new life Annie struggles to build. In a time and place of savagery and splendor, a saga of passion and courage comes flaming to life.   “This gripping story about the healing power of love will pull at your heartstrings.” —Joan Johnston, New York Times–bestselling author of Surrender   “Mills writes fine, humane dialogue and makes good use of history.” —Publishers Weekly
