A collection of essays by female horror writers exploring portrayals of diabolical mothers in both modern and classic horror films. The concept of motherhood, often idealized as the epitome of unconditional love and nurturing, has been twisted and perverted in various cinematic works to explore darker, more complex human dynamics. Led by Bram Stoker, Shirley Jackson Award, and two-time World Fantasy Award winning editor and acclaimed film professor Danel Olson, the essayists introduce listeners to traditional portrayals of mothers in film and literature, establishing a baseline for understanding how diabolical motherhood deviates from the norm. From a historical overview tracing the evolution of malevolent maternal figures in cinema, from early depictions of wicked stepmothers in fairy tales to the complex, to multifaceted monstrous matriarchs of contemporary films, these essays explore the psychological underpinnings of diabolical motherhood, drawing on author's personal experiences, anecdotes, and research to understand the motivations and mental states driving these characters in a wide range of horror films. The essays offer a deeper understanding of how cinema reflects and shapes our perceptions of motherhood, morality, and power. A must-listen for horror aficionados.

The Delhi Sultanate was a defining era in Indian history, marking the establishment of Muslim rule in northern India. Its rise was shaped by a series of invasions, strategic conquests, and the formation of a centralized administration. The foundation of the Sultanate can be traced back to the late 12th century when Muslim forces, primarily from Central Asia, began making inroads into the Indian subcontinent. These incursions set the stage for a new political order that would influence the region for centuries.
One of the earliest significant Muslim invasions was led by Mahmud of Ghazni in the 11th century. Although he did not establish permanent rule, his raids weakened Indian kingdoms and demonstrated the vulnerability of the region. However, it was Muhammad Ghori in the late 12th century who laid the groundwork for the Delhi Sultanate. Unlike Mahmud, Ghori aimed for long-term control rather than mere plundering. His victory over Prithviraj Chauhan at the Second Battle of Tarain in 1192 was a turning point, allowing Muslim forces to establish a foothold in northern India.
Following Ghori’s assassination in 1206, his general, Qutb al-Din Aibak, took control of his Indian territories and proclaimed himself the first Sultan of Delhi. Aibak, originally a slave who rose through the ranks, became the founder of the Mamluk or Slave Dynasty. He consolidated his rule by strengthening administrative structures and commissioning architectural marvels like the Qutb Minar, which symbolized the establishment of Muslim rule. However, his reign was short-lived, and his successor, Iltutmish, played a more crucial role in shaping the Delhi Sultanate into a powerful and stable empire.

In 1998, The Uninvited were poised to become the next multi-platinum darlings of the new millennia. With a hit song burning up the charts and a major label release described as “The breakthrough album of the next decade,” everything was teed-up for a life of sold-out arenas, gold plated Ferraris and Dom Perrion on draft. But the chances are you never heard of The Uninvited – so what the hell happened?
THE UNINVITED: ON THE ROAD WITH THE GREATEST ROCK BAND YOU NEVER HEARD is the story of 5 friends stuffed in a van on a Homer-esque nationwide odyssey, clinging desperately to a gossamer thread of one-hit-wonder fame while sharing the stage with legends like Cheap Trick, Blues Traveler, The Violent Femmes, Chris Isaak, and many more.
For two sweat-drenched and mind-altering years, The Uninvited had fame by the tender bits and squeezed hard. And for Steve, just when it looked like life couldn’t get any better, it did; Mia, so achingly unattainable for so many years, landed squarely in the attainable category. But all these dreams collided in a rush to come true, threatening to unravel everything, just when he held it all in his hand.
THE UNINVITED is a chaotic tale set in the early days of Napster and the last days of Warehouse Records on Sunset Blvd. It’s a memoir for anyone who’s ever cranked the volume up on Pearl Jam and Smashing Pumpkins, or stood in the audience singing their lungs out, and wondering what life is like on the other side of that stage. Unlike any other rock memoir, THE UNINVITED chronicles the harrowing sacrifice necessary to attain a dream – and more importantly, what it takes to let it go.
And there was a gnome, too. He was kind of an asshole.
