Summary

Tokyo, 1990. Disgraced London Met detective Pete Bond has reinvented himself as an English teacher, but his embarrassing secret is nothing compared to the dark event in Suzi Sloane's earlier life.

A promiscuous Londoner, Suzi supplements her day job by topless dancing in a Shinjuku Kabukicho hostess bar. She's considering an offer from Shigeru, a customer at Club O. Meanwhile, Pete crosses paths with Dieter, a drug-dealing German, who appears to be involved in more than drugs and seemingly has a connection with Shigeru.

Before he can investigate Dieter, Pete becomes infatuated with Suzi in Roppongi, the infamous central Tokyo expat bar area. As a web of crime and exploitation in the Tokyo underworld begins to unravel, they are drawn into a deadly series of events.

The first book in the Tokyo Noir series, Nick John's NEON IDENTITY is a hard-hitting crime novel set against the backdrops of Tokyo's Kabukicho and Roppongi.

    NOT ALL DETECTIVES CARRY BADGES
A kosher inspector doesn’t come home one night.
By morning, his wife is certain something is wrong.
    The police aren’t convinced.
He hasn’t been gone long enough. There’s no sign of violence. Officially, there’s nothing to investigate.
That’s when his wife turns to Jake Cooper.
Not a cop. Not licensed. But trained by a retired detective and trusted as the Jewish community’s internal investigator, Jake is often called when concerns don’t yet meet the legal threshold—but feel far more serious.
As Jake retraces the inspector’s final hours, he uncovers strained business relationships, and private confrontations. The man’s methods had quietly damaged reputations—and livelihoods.
Then the inspector’s body is found.
What began as a quiet disappearance becomes a confirmed homicide.
Now the police are fully involved—but Jake is already ahead, tracing the damaged reputations, private confrontations, and financial pressure the inspector left behind. The more he uncovers, the clearer it becomes: this wasn’t a random act.
    Someone saw an opportunity.
Someone believed the risk was worth it.
This is a gripping crime thriller featuring an intellectual investigator, layered deception, and a high-stakes murder set inside a closed world where power and trust collide.
Perfect for readers of investigative crime fiction, parallel police and private investigations, and smart, character-driven suspense.
