Summary

Glass Through Time explores the fascinating history of glass, from its accidental origins to its vital role in modern technology. The book charts glassmaking's evolution, highlighting how this material has profoundly shaped architecture, science, and art.

One intriguing aspect is that early glassmaking techniques, originating in Mesopotamia and Egypt, involved meticulous processes still studied today. Another is the Venetian glass industry's groundbreaking innovations, which set new standards for artistry and craftsmanship.

The book adopts a chronological approach, starting with ancient glass artifacts and progressing through the Roman era, the Middle Ages, and the scientific revolution. Each chapter builds upon the last, examining the social, economic, and scientific contexts that influenced glass development.

By integrating archaeological findings, historical documents, and scientific analyses, Glass Through Time offers a comprehensive view of glass as both a cultural artifact and a scientific marvel, suitable for history enthusiasts, science buffs, and art aficionados alike.

Historian, journalist, educator, and civil rights advocate W. E. B. Du Bois was perhaps most accomplished as a sociologist of race relations and of the black community in the United States. This volume collects his most important sociological writings from 1898 to 1910. The eighteen selections include five on Du Bois’s conception of sociology and sociological research, especially as a tool in the struggle for racial justice; excerpts from studies of black communities in the South and the North, including The Philadelphia Negro; writings on black culture and social life, with a selection from The Negro American Family; and later works on race relations in the United States and elsewhere after World War II. This section includes a powerful fiftieth-anniversary reassessment of his classic 1901 article in the Atlantic in which he predicted that “the problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color line.“

The editors provide an annotated bibliography, a lengthy overview of Du Bois’s life and work, and detailed introductions to the selections.

It is 1963, Jean-Yves Soucy is 18 and looking for a summer job. He dreams of being a fire warden scanning the boreal forest from a fire tower. But to his dismay he is sent to an equipment depot somewhere between Val-d’Or and Chibougamau in Northern Quebec. His disappointment vanishes when he learns that the depot is located near a Cree community and that he will have two Cree guides, including a man named William Saganash, and his work will involve canoeing through the lakes and rivers of the region.
On each encounter with the Crees, on each of the long trips across water or through the bush, Jean-Yves expects to see a new world but realizes he’s meeting a different civilization, as different from his own as Chinese civilization. Yet he knows nothing about it. Nor does he understand the nature surrounding them as do his Cree guides, and friends.
Jean-Yves Soucy wrote this story because Romeo Saganash, son of William, insisted: “You have to write that, Jean-Yves. About your relationship with my father and the others, how you saw the village. You got to see the end of an era.”
He unfortunately passed away before completing it. However, in his poignant Afterword, Romeo Saganash provides a finishing touch to this story of an unlikely meeting of two worlds.
