Summary

In "The New Adam and Eve," included in Hawthorne's collection "Mosses from an Old Manse," the author explores the themes of innocence, nature, and the complexities of human relationships through a contemporary retelling of the biblical Genesis narrative. Set against the backdrop of the mid-19th century American landscape, the story employs Hawthorne's characteristic style, marked by rich symbolism and intricate prose. The narrative reflects the transcendentalist ideals of the period, questioning societal norms and the intrinsic nature of humanity while engaging deeply with the moral dilemmas faced by its characters. Nathaniel Hawthorne, a prominent figure in American literature, was significantly influenced by his Puritan ancestry and the socio-political climate of his time. His exploration of moral complexities and psychological depth invites readers into a conversation about the nature of good and evil. Known for his meticulous attention to language and form, Hawthorne's writing often grapples with themes of alienation and identity, prompting readers to reflect on their own place in the moral landscape of society. This seminal work is highly recommended for readers interested in American literature and the philosophical inquiries it encapsulates. "The New Adam and Eve" invites contemplation of human nature and the pursuit of ideals, making it a timeless exploration relevant to both historical and contemporary discussions.

In The Three Strangers, Thomas Hardy offers a quietly ironic tale shaped by weather, custom, and the unpredictable drift of human fate. Set against the backdrop of rural Wessex, the story unfolds on the border between the ordinary and the uncanny — a place where identity flickers and appearances mislead.
With his signature restraint, Hardy lets the narrative circle slowly inward, revealing not only the secret at its heart, but something of the way justice, chance, and character meet in the dark folds of the countryside.

Edith Newbold Jones was born in New York on January 24, 1862. Born into wealth, this background of privilege gave her a wealth of experience to eventually, after several false starts, produce many works based on it culminating in her Pulitzer Prize winning novel ‘The Age Of Innocence’
Marriage to Edward Robbins Wharton, who was 12 years older in 1885 seemed to offer much and for some years they travelled extensively. After some years it was apparent that her husband suffered from acute depression and so the travelling ceased and they retired to The Mount, their estate designed by Edith. By 1908 his condition was said to be incurable and prior to divorcing Edward in 1913 she began an affair, in 1908, with Morton Fullerton, a Times journalist, who was her intellectual equal and allowed her writing talents to push forward and write the novels for which she is so well known.
Acknowledged as one of the great American writers with novels such as Ethan Frome and the House of Mirth among many. Wharton also wrote many short stories, including ghost stories and poems which we are pleased to publish.
Edith Wharton died of a stroke in 1937 at the Domaine Le Pavillon Colombe, her 18th-century house on Rue de Montmorency in Saint-Brice-sous-Forêt.
