Varṇaprastha is a stage of life in the Vedic tradition often considered as the third stage in the four stages of life (āśrama) outlined in the ancient Vedas. Varṇaprastha, which means "retiring into the woods," is characterized by a gradual withdrawal from worldly affairs and a focus on spiritual pursuits. The stage of Varṇaprastha is typically undertaken by people in their fifties or sixties after they have completed their duties as householders and raised their children. In this stage, individuals are encouraged to devote themselves to spiritual pursuits, including meditation, prayer, and the study of religious texts, and detach themselves from material possessions and desires.

During Varṇaprastha, individuals are expected to detach themselves from their families and communities gradually and to live an ascetic lifestyle. They may choose to live in seclusion in the forest or in a hermitage, or they may continue to live with their families in a more detached and spiritually-focused manner. The purpose of this stage is to prepare individuals for the final stage of life, sannyasa, in which they renounce all material possessions and dedicate themselves fully to spiritual pursuits. The stage of Varṇaprastha is considered an important part of the spiritual journey, allowing individuals to focus on their spiritual growth and prepare themselves for the eventual goal of liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

As baby boomers retire and enter their later years, many are turning to spirituality and religion as a source of comfort and guidance. Some are seeking a deeper connection to a higher power, while others are looking for a sense of community and purpose in their lives. This trend has led to an increase in the popularity of yoga, meditation, and other spiritual practices among this generation.

Narrated by author, Emmy-nominated actor, and lifelong Bhakti yogi Sripad Jagannatha Das.

This Dark Ages biography chronicles the life of one of the period's most famous women: the ruler of Mercia who took England back from the Vikings.

At the end of the ninth century, a large part of what is now England was controlled by the Vikings—warlike Scandinavians who had been attacking the British Isles for more than a hundred years. Alfred the Great, king of Wessex, was determined to regain the conquered lands. But when he died in 899 A.D., the task passed to his son Edward. In the early 900s, Edward led a great fight against the Viking armies, assisted by the English rulers of Mercia: Lord Æthelred and his wife Æthelflæd, who was also Edward's sister.

After her husband's death, Æthelflæd ruled Mercia on her own, leading the army to war and working with her brother to achieve their father's aims. Known to history as the Lady of the Mercians, she earned a reputation as a capable general who was feared by her enemies. In this authoritative biography, Tim Clarkson tells her remarkable life story from childhood to her vital role in saving England from the Vikings.

'The narrative took my breath away' Philippe Sands
'An extraordinarily and shockingly powerful read' Peter Frankopan
'One of the must-reads of the year' Suzannah Lipscomb
    'Brilliant and provocative' Gavin Esler

Sarah Churchwell examines one of the most enduringly popular stories of all time, Gone with the Wind, to help explain the divisions ripping the United States apart today. Separating fact from fiction, she shows how histories of mythmaking have informed America's racial and gender politics, the controversies over Confederate statues, the resurgence of white nationalism, the Black Lives Matter movement, the enduring power of the American Dream, and the violence of Trumpism.

Gone with the Wind was an instant bestseller when it was published in 1936; its film version became the most successful Hollywood film of all time. Today the story's racism is again a subject of controversy, but it was just as controversial in the 1930s, foreshadowing today's debates over race and American fascism. In The Wrath to Come, Sarah Churchwell charts an extraordinary journey through 160 years of American denialism. From the Lost Cause to the romances behind the Ku Klux Klan, from the invention of the 'ideal' slave plantation to the erasure of interwar fascism, Churchwell shows what happens when we do violence to history, as collective denial turns fictions into lies, and lies into a vicious reality.
