Sinopse

Sarcasm History explores sarcasm's intricate role throughout history, examining how its perception and use vary across cultures and contexts. The book analyzes sarcasm as a powerful tool in literature, politics, and everyday interactions, illustrating how it can both unite and divide. It traces sarcasm from ancient texts to modern media, revealing how its function has evolved, with some cultures embracing it as humor while others deem it offensive.

Beginning with sarcasm's etymological roots, the book progresses through literature, political discourse, and social interactions. Literary analysis reveals how authors employ sarcasm to critique society and develop characters. In politics, sarcasm serves as a tool for persuasion and dissent, as seen in the rhetoric of ancient Roman orators and contemporary political commentators.

The book highlights that effective intercultural communication hinges on understanding sarcasm's nuances, as misinterpretations can lead to conflict. By examining diverse sources from literature to sociological research, Sarcasm History connects to psychology, sociology, and communications. It addresses ongoing debates about whether sarcasm indicates intelligence or aggression, offering a framework for understanding its complex nature.

Ultimately, the book provides a comprehensive overview of sarcasm's evolution and cultural significance, emphasizing its multifaceted role in human communication and cultural expression.

This volume offers a curated selection of five previously-published texts that, in different ways, address the topic of learning. The first three selections, "The Determinants of Human Action: The SOAR Model," "On Learning," and "On Teaching," were originally published in Observers and Their Worlds (J.C. Sáez Editor, 2025). The last two, "Listening" and "Modes of Speaking and the Path of Inquiry," appeared in Actos de Lenguaje, Vol. I (J.C. Sáez, Editor, 2007).

On Learning was originally published to provide supplementary material to students in training programs aimed at teachers and educational administrators, but they contain contributions to the field of teaching and learning that are relevant to a broader audience. For this reason the publisher has chosen to make it more widely available, in English.

While this book may be read easily without any previous understanding of Rafael Echeverría's proposals, readers may be drawn to explore his wider body of work, much of which has been published in Spanish by our publishing house and is now becoming available in English. The titles can be found on the inside flap of this edition.

  • 'Look Back to Look Forward' - Frank O'Connor's Complete Translations from the Irish - cover

'Look Back to Look Forward' -...

    Frank O'Connor

While Frank O'Connor was known primarily as one of Ireland's finest short-story writers, he was also an accomplished translator. In the long line of Irish writers given to translating poems in Irish into poems written in English – a tradition stretching back at least as far as Jonathan Swift – he stands out above all the rest.
Between the mid-1920s and the mid-1960s, O'Connor published 121 translations that give voice to the full range of this centuries-old tradition. Collected here in full for the first time, O'Connor's work shows an uncanny aptitude for carrying over into English verse many of the riches to be found in the originals – the ancient voice of the Hag of Beare lamenting her decline into old age; the voices of the early monks describing the Irish landscape, Irish weather, their religious faith, and, in at least one instance, their cat; the voice of Hugh O'Rourke's wife torn between loyalty to her husband and a rising desire for her seducer. All these voices haunted O'Connor throughout his career, whatever else he was doing. The collection includes the Irish-language sources for all 121 translations along with literal translations, enabling the reader to see what O'Connor started from.
O'Connor's translations sprang from a compulsive desire to breathe life into Ireland's past, to 'look back to look forward,' as he once put it; for him the Irish-language tradition was not for scholars and archives alone, but formed a living body of work vitally relevant to an Ireland that seemed puzzlingly indifferent to it.
Thanks to O'Connor's profound love of his country's language and its rich, literary subsoil – 'a literature of which no Irishman need feel ashamed', he once said – these voices from Ireland's past can still be heard. Strikingly modern in tone, they conjoin flesh and spirit, the sacred and the secular, in a way that speaks to humankind.
