Summary

Rain Before Drought explores the intricate relationship between climate change and the collapse of civilizations throughout history, offering crucial insights for our current environmental challenges. It argues that societies have crumbled not just from wars or political turmoil, but from an inability to adapt to shifting weather patterns like prolonged drought. Examining past societies reveals that even minor changes in rainfall or temperature can destabilize food production and exacerbate social inequalities, ultimately undermining entire civilizations.

The book investigates these collapses through case studies, beginning with paleoclimatology and environmental history. It analyzes examples such as the Mayan civilization, the Anasazi, and the Dust Bowl era, illustrating specific climate changes, affected social systems, and contributing factors to decline.

The book emphasizes that these collapses result from complex interactions between environmental stress, existing social vulnerabilities, and inadequate adaptation. Understanding these historical precedents is vital for developing resilient agricultural systems and managing water resources effectively in the face of contemporary climate change.

Finally, the book examines the implications of these historical examples for contemporary climate adaptation. It advocates for strategies to mitigate social and political risks associated with climate-related displacement and conflict. By presenting a comparative analysis of multiple historical collapses, Rain Before Drought identifies common patterns and critical differences in how societies have responded to climate change, offering a framework for understanding the past and planning for a future increasingly shaped by climate change.

A fascinating exploration of the natural history of scent and human perceptions of fragrance from the viewpoint of plant and pollinator

Plants have long harnessed the chemical characteristics of aromatic compounds to shape the world around them. Frankincense resin from the genus Boswellia seals injured tissues and protects trees from invading pathogens. Jasmine produces a molecule called linalool that attracts pollinating moths with its flowery scent. Tobacco uses a similarly sweet-smelling compound called benzyl acetone to attract pollinators. Only recently in the evolutionary history of plants, however, have humans learned to co-opt their fragrances to seduce, heal, protect, and alter moods themselves.

In this wide-ranging and accessible new book, biologist-turned-perfumer Elise Vernon Pearlstine turns our human-centered perception of fragrance on its head and investigates plants' evolutionary reasons for creating aromatic molecules. Delving into themes of spirituality, wealth, power, addiction, royalty, fantasy, and more, Pearlstine uncovers the natural history of aromatic substances and their intersection with human culture and civilization.

The Highs. The Heartbreaks. The Hangovers.
The Personal. The Vulnerable. The Downright Absurd.
    IT'S TIME TO RELOAD.
As was widely predicted, our first book, The Good, The Bad & The Rugby – Unleashed, did not win a Pulitzer Prize. It did, however, scoop Sports Entertainment Book of the Year at the 2025 Charles Tyrwhitt Sports Book Awards (and sold quite a lot of copies), so here we are again, back for a sequel.
What more have we to say? It’s a fair question. Hask can mine more new material from a trip to the supermarket than most people can from an entire lifetime – and you won’t be surprised to learn that he hasn’t just been hanging around Asda since our last book came out. He recently turned 40, he’s been through much personal turmoil, he’s done an awful lot of DJing – and he’s had a lot of arguments. Expect much of that, and even some thoughts on rugby, in the following pages.
As for Tins, you’ll find out about his early days in rugby, how he had to fight to make it, what he thinks of the state of the game, and his plans to get it back on track. Meanwhile, Alex will tell you all about his career in broadcasting, from making (‘disgusting’) tea and coffee, and presenting some of the greatest rugby matches in history, to getting binned by Sky.
We should end by begging you to pardon our previous flippancy. It was, of course, lovely to win that award, as well as very surprising. In fact, The Good, The Bad & The Rugby will never stop surprising us, and its continuing success is largely down to you – our wonderful listeners, viewers and now readers. We do hope you enjoy what follows and that you keep coming back for more.
Winners of the Charles Tyrwhitt Sports Book Awards 2025 Sports Entertainment Book of the Year, for their previous book The Good, The Bad and The Rugby – Unleashed.
In this non-fiction sequel, Haskell continues to share his humorous memoirs, diving deeper into his personal turmoil and his journey into the world of DJing. His candid revelations, coupled with Tins insights into the state of rugby and Alex's broadcasting career, make this an up-coming bestseller.
For fans of Rachel Murphy (Loose Head), Luke Upton (Hard Men of Rugby), Peter Crouch (How to Be an Ex-Footballer), and Jonny Wilkinson (Jonny).
