Summary

Mythic Interpretations explores the profound ways indigenous cosmologies have shaped societies and their understanding of the world. These ancient belief systems provided explanations for natural phenomena, like eclipses and floods, and influenced societal values, impacting daily life. The book reveals how these mythic interpretations are more than just stories; they are sophisticated attempts to understand and interact with the environment, challenging conventional Western perspectives.

The book examines how indigenous cultures wove cosmological understandings into social life, such as kinship systems and governance structures. It begins by introducing core concepts like animism and sacred space. Subsequent sections explore mythic explanations for natural phenomena, how cosmological beliefs are embodied in social structures, and the ethical implications of these beliefs. The book culminates by considering the relevance of indigenous cosmologies in the modern world, suggesting how these perspectives can inform contemporary debates about sustainability and cultural preservation.

Through a comparative approach, drawing on ethnographic accounts and oral histories, Mythic Interpretations highlights the rationality and coherence of indigenous knowledge systems, offering valuable insights into human-environment interactions. This exploration contributes to fields such as environmental studies and comparative religion, making it valuable for those interested in history, religion, and indigenous cultures.

Leadership under pressure: the personal account of the commander of the Royal Naval Task Group deployed to Libya in 2011.In April 2011, the newly created Royal Navy Response Force Task Group deployed to the Mediterranean to provide a range of military options in response to the Arab Spring. For the next six months the group planned and prepared for a range of potential operations including noncombatant evacuations from Libya, Yemen and Syria, maritime interdiction operations off the Libyan coast, and amphibious landings. On 3 June the group began launching attack helicopter strikes into Libya and in the nights that followed planned 47 and executed 22 strikes destroying a range of targets including: 54 vehicles, 2 rigid hull boats, 2 BM 21 rocket launchers, 4 main battle tanks, 1 zsu antiaircraft vehicle and 3 command and control nodes. The operation saw the first operational use of Apaches from the sea and the first embarkation of US Army combat search and rescue teams and Blackhawk helicopters in an RN warship. This is a personal account by the Group’s Commander, which brings to life the challenges of command – including authorizing strikes and mitigating risk to UK aircrew – in a complex and challenging environment. It reveals how closely the RN Group worked with its French counterpart, the support provided by the United States, together with the complexity of working alongside NATO and of simultaneously dealing with a range of UK authorities. This is a story of leadership under pressure and the remarkable professionalism of all involved and the bravery of Army aircrew. It was modern defense and joinery at its best – British Army and USAF helicopters operating from RN ships, supported by Fleet Air Arm aircraft and fixed wing jets as part of a largely air campaign.

This program is read by the author, Will Jawando, who has been called “the progressive leader we need” by the late congressman John Lewis."Will Jawando's account of mentorship, service, and healing lays waste to the racist stereotype of the absent Black father. By arguing that Black fathers are not just found in individual families, but are indeed the treasure of entire Black communities, Will makes the case for a bold idea: that Black men can counter racist ideas and policies by virtue of their presence in the lives of Black boys and young men. This is a story we need to hear." —Ibram X. Kendi, New York Times–bestselling author of How to be an AntiracistWill Jawando tells a deeply affirmative story of hope and respect for men of color at a time when Black men are routinely stigmatized. As a boy growing up outside DC, Will, who went by his Nigerian name, Yemi, was shunted from school to school, never quite fitting in. He was a Black kid with a divorced white mother, a frayed relationship with his biological father, and teachers who scolded him for being disruptive in class and on the playground. Eventually, he became close to Kalfani, a kid he looked up to on the basketball court. Years after he got the call telling him that Kalfani was dead, another sickening casualty of gun violence, Will looks back on the relationships with an extraordinary series of mentors that enabled him to thrive.Among them were Mr. Williams, the rare Black male grade school teacher, who found a way to bolster Will’s self-esteem when he discovered he was being bullied; Jay Fletcher, the openly gay colleague of his mother who got him off junk food and took him to his first play; Mr. Holmes, the high school coach and chorus director who saw him through a crushing disappointment; Deen Sanwoola, the businessman who helped him bridge the gap between his American upbringing and his Nigerian heritage, eventually leading to a dramatic reconciliation with his biological father; and President Barack Obama, who made Will his associate director of public engagement at the White House—and who invited him to play basketball on more than one occasion. Without the influence of these men, Will knows he would not be who he is today: a civil rights and education policy attorney, a civic leader, a husband, and a father.Drawing on Will’s inspiring personal story and involvement in My Brother’s Keeper, President Obama’s national initiative to address persistent opportunity gaps facing boys and young men of color, My Seven Black Fathers offers a transformative way for Black men to shape the next generation. Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, better known as Emperor Claudius, ruled the Roman Empire from 41 to 54 AD. Born in Lugdunum (modern-day Lyon, France), in 10 BC, Claudius was the son of Drusus and Antonia Minor, both prominent figures in the Roman elite. His birthplace marked a significant departure from previous emperors, as he was the first Roman Emperor born outside Italy. Though Claudius’ family was rooted in the ancient Sabine people, his upbringing would not follow the traditional path of an elite Roman, largely due to his physical infirmities. He suffered from a limp and mild deafness, conditions that led his family to deem him unfit for public life and dismiss him from military and political endeavors.
Growing up in the shadows of more capable and ambitious relatives, Claudius was largely ignored by the Roman aristocracy. His health issues, though perhaps a result of childhood illness, kept him out of sight and out of mind during the brutal purges of Tiberius and Caligula. This absence from political life proved advantageous, as it spared him the many assassination attempts that claimed the lives of his more prominent family members. In a twist of fate, following the assassination of Caligula in 41 AD, the Praetorian Guard, upon finding him hiding in fear, declared Claudius the new emperor. As the only remaining adult male in his family, Claudius ascended to the throne, despite his perceived weakness.
Despite initial doubts about his ability to rule, Claudius quickly proved to be a capable and intelligent administrator. He worked tirelessly to stabilize the Roman Empire, which had suffered under the excesses of Caligula’s reign. One of his first actions was to restore the empire’s finances, expanding the imperial bureaucracy to include freedmen, and re-establishing order in the imperial administration.
