Summary

When Timothee leaves his home in France to attend law school in America, he believes he is doing what he has always been destined to do. His parents died when he was very young, and a note from his father is Timothee’s only connection to him. The letter compels Timothee to pursue law, even though it means giving up his filmmaking dreams. Not long after he gets to California, a mysterious envelope containing a strange script arrives on his doorstep, setting Timothee on a path he never imagined in his wildest dreams.Inspired by Old Hollywood, this intriguing noir novel set in 1960s Los Angeles is the perfect escape. It tells the tale of ambition, misplaced promises, hope, and the very real potential that the impossible might just be possible. All the while, unexpected friendships will be forged and rekindled, important questions will be answered, movie stars will be met, secrets will be uncovered and new ones will appear. Most important, though, is the question of where that script is coming from and whether Timothee will eventually find what he has spent his whole life looking for.

Kit may be the youngest wizard ever, but she sure doesn’t feel like the best wizard. Her magic just keeps going wrong, and other weird stuff is happening too: talking animals, exploding fireballs, and a very strange new arrival in the local park. Even Dogon (the half dog, half dragon) is droopy! So Kit and her two best friends—animal-whispering Alita and studious Josh—set off with Faith the librarian to investigate this wild magic that’s causing so much commotion. Their journey takes them to a Scottish loch, where they meet an eco-conscious wizard and some very grumpy mermaids (careful, they pinch!). But the danger is greater than they imagined, and it will take everybody’s help to set things right again.

Vaccines have been used to safely introduce people's bodies to diseases for centuries, and they save millions of lives each year. By giving people a weakened or dead version of a disease, a vaccine allows the body to develop antibodies which recognize and fight the disease later on.

Early vaccinations used dry scabs from smallpox to promote smallpox immunity. Doctors and scientists across nations took and improved the method, developing vaccines for health crises from whooping cough to polio to COVID-19. This graphic history features famous cases and current challenges, including the time frame for creating a new vaccine.

With three hearts and blue blood, its gelatinous body unconstrained by jointed limbs or gravity, the octopus seems to be an alien, an inhabitant of another world. It’s baggy, boneless body sprouts eight arms covered with thousands of suckers—suckers that can taste as well as feel. The octopus also has the powers of a superhero: it can shape-shift, change color, squirt ink, pour itself through the tiniest of openings, or jet away through the sea faster than a swimmer can follow.         But most intriguing of all, octopuses—classed as mollusks, like clams—are remarkably intelligent with quirky personalities. This book, an inquiry into the mind of an intelligent invertebrate, is also a foray into our own unexplored planet. These thinking, feeling creatures can help readers experience and understand our world (and perhaps even life itself) in a new way.
