Summary

Welcome to Black Cat Weekly #46.

This is one of our longest issues to date, thanks to no less than 3 novels! Not only is there a Nick Carter mystery novel, but we also have a classic time-travel novel from Edmond Hamilton, plus We, by Yevgeny Zamyatin—one of the most important dystopian novels of all time, influential on generations of writers, including Ursula K. Le Guin and Kurt Vonnegut. Not to mention George Orwell!

Of course, our acquiring editors have also selected great tales by S. Phillip Lenski (an original mystery), Stephanie Jaye Evans (a remarkable crime tale, as a mother plans to commit murder for her son), and a science fiction story by Hugo Award-winner David D. Levine. Great Stuff.

Plus we have stories by James Holding, Larry Tritten, and Murray Leinster...and what issue would be complete without a solve-it-yourself puzzler from Hal Charles?

Phillip Lenski [Michael Bracken Presents short story]“Bottled Up,” Hal Charles [Solve-It-Yourself Mystery]“Jamie’s Mother,” Stephanie Jaye Evans [Barb Goffman Presents short story]“The Baby Bit,” by James Holding [short story]The Call of Death, by Nicholas Carter [novel]

A desperate woman, determined to prove her worth to the agency. An ex-outlaw and seasoned agent who only works alone. When Mr. Archibald orders a marriage for the sake of the case (and agency), will these two be able to keep things strictly business, or will their marriage turn into something to last?
When Victoria Gordon finds out her brother, Detective Archibald Gordon, is pairing his agents with wives in an effort to integrate women into the field, she can’t pass up the opportunity to join the Pinkertons. Besides living a life on the outside, always looking in, Victoria’s admired one particular agent—Mav Jones—for far too long. With the help of her brother’s secretary, Victoria finds a way to scheme her way into the agency, but can she scheme her way into the heart of one of the agency’s most dangerous men?
Mav Jones isn’t happy about the idea of female agents; he’s known too many silly women. So when Archie convinces Mav to marry for the sake of a case, Mav agrees but only under certain conditions. He determines the marriage is strictly business, but his new wife is surprisingly familiar, all too beautiful, and in deeper trouble than she realizes.
Thrust into the 1871-San Francisco world of stolen and smuggled goods, enemies and allies, truth and lies, can Mav and Victoria navigate their way without falling into harm’s way and into each other’s arms?

They arrive alive. They always leave dead.
But first, they give me their confessions.
My name is Jack Steen, and for those who arrive on my 'death' ward at the Asylum, I'm the last face many will see before they die. I am the night nurse at an Asylum for the Criminally Insane, and most of my patients know me as their Angel of Death. I know them as mass murderers, rapists, and serial killers - among other things.
Here's what happens: they come on my floor, they give me their deathbed confession, and I help to make their death less painful. There's a catch, though: I want the real story, the one they haven't told anyone else.
The majority of these killers are expert manipulators. They could be playing their final game with me by messing with my head.
Now, maybe they're messing with yours too.
Inside this book are 5 confessions:
One thought she gave birth to the antichrist.
One has the nickname of The Candyman - any guesses why?
One grew up in a cult and believes he's the first of a 'pure' race.
Another was part of a secret government test, and I've been waiting for his confession for a while!
Then there's this kid who loved Halloween and believed in all the rules. I sure hope you didn't break any...
WARNING: There is swearing in this book. And some stories might be a trigger for something you have a hard time handling. But, these are the confessions of serial killers, mass murderers, and such, so what do you expect?
