Summary

In "Memoirs and Resolutions of Adam Graeme of Mossgray," Mrs. Oliphant presents a richly detailed narrative that intricately weaves the personal reflections of its protagonist, Adam Graeme, with the socio-political landscape of 19th-century Scotland. The novel is characterized by Mrs. Oliphant's deft prose and psychological insight, exploring themes of duty, identity, and moral resolution amidst the complexities of familial and societal obligations. This work is a significant contribution to the genre of Scottish literature, allowing readers to engage with the spiritual and ethical dilemmas faced by its characters, positioned within an era of profound change and social strife. Mrs. Oliphant, a prominent literary figure of her time, was deeply embedded in the cultural currents of her era, which undoubtedly shaped her narrative style and thematic focus. Known for her keen observations on gender and class, she employed her life experiences—a blend of personal loss and professional challenges—to fuel her literary endeavors. Her commitment to illuminating the inner lives of her characters is evident in Graeme's journey, reflecting her own struggles and insights in a rapidly changing world. I highly recommend "Memoirs and Resolutions of Adam Graeme of Mossgray" for those seeking an introspective exploration of personal integrity against a backdrop of societal expectations. Mrs. Oliphant's profound understanding of human nature invites readers into a thoughtful discourse on the choices that define us. This novel is a captivating read for both scholars and casual readers alike.

He thought the nightmare was over, but nearly twenty years later, "the most terrible Mafioso in Ukraine" was back.

This book is not just a memoir but a confession. In 1994, author Sergey Maidukov accepted an "exciting business offer" from Samvel Martirosyan, later renowned as one of the most brutal and indomitable leaders of the Ukrainian Mafia. Maidukov quickly discovered that his job as "president" of a newly created business was actually a front for Mafia activities. Despite regular attempts to extricate himself, he was told that it was too late in no uncertain terms. Thus ensued five adrenaline-fueled years in a long-term apprenticeship with the Mafia underground.

Deadly Bonds: Five Years Inside the Ukrainian Mafia provides a deep look at the Mafia family that dominated the twentieth century post-Soviet state and how it brewed conditions of economic, political, and moral catastrophe.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born on 29th January 1860 in Taganrog, on the south coast of Russia.
His family life was difficult; his father was strict and over-bearing but his mother was a passionate story-teller, a subject Chekhov warmed to. As he later said; ‘our talents we got from our father, but our soul from our mother’.
At school Chekhov was distinctly average. At 16 his father mis-managed his finances and was declared bankrupt. His family fled to Moscow. Chekhov remained and eked out a living by various means, including writing and selling short sketches to newspapers, to finish his schooling. That completed and with a scholarship to Moscow University obtained he rejoined his family.
He was able to help support them by selling satirical sketches and vignettes of Russian lifestyles and gradually obtained further commissions. In 1884, he qualified as a physician and, although it earned him little, he often treated the poor for free, he was fond of saying ‘Medicine is my lawful wife, and literature is my mistress.’
His own health was now an issue as he began to cough up blood, a symptom of tuberculosis. Despite this his writing success enabled him to move the family into more comfortable accommodation.
Chekhov wrote over 500 short stories which included many, many classics including ‘The Kiss’ and ‘The Lady with a Dog’. His collection ‘At Dusk’ won him the coveted Pushkin Prize when was only 26.
He was also a major playwright beginning with the huge success of ‘Ivanov’ in 1887.
In 1892 Chekhov bought a country estate north of Moscow. Here his medical skills and money helped the peasants tackle outbreaks of cholera and bouts of famine. He also built three schools, a fire station and a clinic. It left him with less time for writing but the interactions with real people gained him detailed knowledge about the peasantry and their living conditions for his stories.
His most famous work, ‘The Seagull’ was received disastrously at its premiere in St Petersburg. It was later restaged in Moscow to highlight its psychological aspects and was a huge success. It led to ‘Uncle Vanya’, ‘The Three Sisters’ and ‘The Cherry Orchard’.
Chekhov suffered a major lung hemorrhage in 1897 while visiting Moscow. A formal diagnosis confirmed tuberculosis and the doctors ordered changes to his lifestyle.
Despite a dread of weddings the elusive literary bachelor quietly married the actress Olga Knipper, whom he had met at rehearsals for ‘The Seagull’, on 25th May 1901.
By May 1904 with his tuberculosis worsening and death imminent he set off for the German town of Badenweiler writing cheerful, witty letters to his family and assuring them his health was improving.
On 15th July 1904 Anton Chekhov died at Badenweiler. He was 44.

This isn’t an ordinary business book, or an ordinary autobiography. It’s not merely a rollercoaster, either, but an entire theme park full of them: a traumatic childhood, two tragic accidents, multiple descents into darkness and slow climbs back into the light, reckoning with the disease of alcoholism, years working to exhaustion in the trenches, leaving one family to find another, a breakdown and redemption–and that’s just the first half of the story. Here, every stage of life becomes its own rollercoaster: love, marriage, pregnancy, motherhood, all while becoming a first-time founder, CEO, and Christian. Grothe’s dramatic life story merges with a twisting, turning chronicle on the highest highs and lowest lows of business–and of faith–and how all of the above are inextricably intertwined.

Combat biographies of seven ace pilots flying for the Nazi German air force during World War II, featuring in-the-cockpit accounts of aerial dogfights. Whether providing support for the blitzkrieg in Poland and France, bombing British cities and industrial centers, or attacking Allied fighters and bombers in the light of day and dark of night, the Luftwaffe revolutionized aerial warfare and experienced some of World War II’s most harrowing combat. For the pilots who carried out these missions, every flight meant possible death and certain danger. Franz Kurowski puts readers in the cockpit with seven of these men—three day-fighter, on night-fighter, one close-support, and two bomber pilots—who were among the most successful ever to take to the skies.
