Americans generally show great respect for their troops, and rightfully so. But what is the history of the US Armed Forces? How did the American military come about?
The answers to these questions might not be quite as straightforward as you might think. The American military industrial complex, as one former president once called it, was not always so streamlined and efficient.
It began more or less as a ragtag bunch of colonialists and revolutionaries who struggled with some of the most fundamental concepts of military discipline. Nevertheless, this ragtag group ultimately shook off the yoke of the British Empire and forged an independent nation.
In this audiobook, we take a look at America’s military might from its inception to the present day. We explore the beginnings of both pre- and post-revolutionary America, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, the world wars, the wars in Korea and Vietnam, the War on Terror, and more. The American military is still considered a force to be reckoned with, and its story is one that continues to be written about.
In this audiobook, you will learn about the following:The interesting origin of the US Armed ForcesThe participation of American militias in the Revolutionary WarArmed conflict during the Civil WarAmerica’s participation in the world warsHow America was involved in the Cold War conflictThe War on Terror and how it influenced world politicsHow American’s military advanced throughout the yearsAnd much more!

    ELVIS PRESLEY
THE ULTIMATE TRIVIA AND CURIOUS FACTS COLLECTION

    CREATED BY TRIVIA HUB

Elvis Presley, born in 1935, became known as the "King of Rock and Roll". He was a singer and actor whose career took off in 1954 when Sam Phillips recorded him singing "That's All Right," a blues number. Elvis’s performances were known for their suggestive movements and gyrations which created controversy. Despite this, his popularity grew rapidly. He signed with RCA Victor in 1955 and had his first number-one hit with "Heartbreak Hotel" in 1956. Elvis’s music combined elements of rock and roll, pop, rockabilly, country, gospel, R&B, and blues. He was drafted into the US Army in 1958 and died at the age of 42 in 1977.

    CURIOUS FACT SAMPLES:

Elvis Presley's twin brother, Jesse Garon, was delivered stillborn 35 minutes before Elvis was born. Elvis became very close to his parents, especially his mother, growing up in Tupelo, Mississippi.

The Presley family attended an Assembly of God church, where Elvis found his initial musical inspiration. They often relied on neighbors and government food assistance because Vernon Presley moved from one odd job to the next.

Sam Phillips was looking for someone who could bring the sound of black musicians to a broader audience. He invited Elvis to record after being impressed with his singing, pairing him with guitarist Winfield "Scotty" Moore and upright bass player Bill Black.

During an unfruitful recording session, Elvis launched into a 1946 blues number, Arthur Crudup's "That's All Right", which Phillips began taping. This was the sound he had been looking for, which led to the start of Elvis's career.

    The Floating University -...

In 1926, New York University professor James E. Lough—an educational reformer with big dreams—embarked on a bold experiment he called the Floating University. Lough believed that taking five hundred American college students around the globe by ship would not only make them better citizens of the world but would demonstrate a model for responsible and productive education amid the unprecedented dangers, new technologies, and social upheavals of the post–World War I world. But the Floating University’s maiden voyage was also its last: when the ship and its passengers returned home, the project was branded a failure—the antics of students in hotel bars and port city back alleys that received worldwide press coverage were judged incompatible with educational attainment, and Lough was fired and even put under investigation by the State Department.

In her new book, Tamson Pietsch excavates a rich and meaningful picture of Lough’s grand ambition, its origins, and how it reveals an early-twentieth-century America increasingly defined both by its imperialism and the professionalization of its higher education system. As Pietsch argues, this voyage—powered by an internationalist worldview—traced the expanding tentacles of US power, even as it tried to model a new kind of experiential education. She shows that this apparent educational failure actually exposes a much larger contest over what kind of knowledge should underpin university authority, one in which direct personal experience came into conflict with academic expertise. After a journey that included stops at nearly fifty international ports and visits with figures ranging from Mussolini to Gandhi, what the students aboard the Floating University brought home was not so much knowledge of the greater world as a demonstration of their nation’s rapidly growing imperial power.

A searing analysis of health and illness under capitalism from hosts of the hit podcast Death Panel

Written by cohosts of the hit Death Panel podcast and longtime disability justice and healthcare activists Beatrice Adler-Bolton and Artie, Health Communism first examines how capital has instrumentalized health, disability, madness, and illness to create a class seen as "surplus," regarded as a fiscal and social burden. Demarcating the healthy from the surplus, the worker from the "unfit" to work, the authors argue, serves not only to undermine solidarity but to mark whole populations for extraction by the industries that have emerged to manage and contain this "surplus" population. Health Communism then looks to the grave threat capital poses to global public health, and at the rare movements around the world that have successfully challenged the extractive economy of health.

Ultimately, Adler-Bolton and Vierkant argue, we will not succeed in defeating capitalism until we sever health from capital. To do this will require a radical new politics of solidarity that centers the surplus, built on an understanding that we must not base the value of human life on one's willingness or ability to be productive within the current political economy. Capital, it turns out, only fears health.
