Summary

The bestselling author of The One-in-a-Million Boy has crafted a story collection that “illuminates the grace in the average and everyday” of a small town (San Francisco Chronicle).

In ten interlinking stories, the town of Abbot Falls reacts as Ernie Whitten, pipefitter, builds a giant ark in his backyard. Ernie was weeks away from a pension-secured retirement when the union went on strike. Now his wife Marie is ill. Struck with sudden inspiration, Ernie builds the ark as a work of art for his wife to see from the window; a vessel to carry them both away; or a plea for God to spare Marie, come hell or high water.

As the ark takes shape, the rest of the town carries on. There’s Dan Little, a building-code enforcer who comes to fine Ernie for the ark and makes a significant discovery about himself; Francine Love, a precocious thirteen-year-old who longs to be a part of the family-like world of the union workers; and Atlantic Pulp & Paper CEO Henry John McCoy, an impatient man wearily determined to be a good father to his twenty-six-year-old daughter. The people of Abbott Falls will try their best to hold a community together, against the fiercest of odds . . .

Few writers can capture the extraordinary within seemingly ordinary lives as does Monica Wood. An unforgettable tapestry of love, loneliness—and neighbors.

“Like Elizabeth Strout, her fellow chronicler of small-town Maine life, Monica Wood imbues her characters with the complexity and humanity of real people. Ernie’s Ark is as true as life.” ?Christina Baker Kline, New York Times bestselling author

Eve's Diary is a comic short story by Mark Twain. It was first published in the 1905 Christmas issue of the magazine Harper's Bazaar, and in book format in June 1906 by Harper and Brothers publishing house. It is written in the style of a diary kept by the first woman in the Judeao-Christian creation myth, Eve, and is claimed to be "translated from the original MS." The "plot" of this novel is the first-person account of Eve from her creation up to her burial by, her mate, Adam, including meeting and getting to know Adam, and exploring the world around her, Eden. The story then jumps 40 years into the future after the Fall and expulsion from Eden. It is one of a series of books Twain wrote concerning the story of Adam and Eve, including 'Extracts from Adam's Diary,' 'That Day In Eden,' 'Eve Speaks,' 'Adam's Soliloquy,' and the 'Autobiography of Eve.' Eve's Diary has a lighter tone than the others in the series, as Eve has a strong appreciation for beauty and love. The book may have been written as a posthumous love-letter to Mark Twain's wife Olivia Langdon Clemens, or Livy, who died in June 1904, just before the story was written. Mark Twain is quoted as saying, "Eve's Diary is finished - I've been waiting for her to speak, but she doesn't say anything more." The story ends with Adam's speaking at Eve's grave, "Wherever she was, there was Eden." (Introduction by Wikipedia)

Walter Sydney Masterman (1876 – 1946) was an English author of mystery, fantasy, horror and science fiction novels and stories. "The Leather Case" is an adventure story about a young man who has just reached Paris after five years working in India as an engineer. While in Paris, he is startled by seeing a young woman whose face seems remarkably familiar, although it is impossible that he can have ever met her before. Moreover the companion of the girl - apparently an uncle - seems to be going out of his way to engage the young engineer in a mysterious project in Silesia. Eventually the young man remembers an incident in the trenches during the great war when he saved an enemy officer who was bleeding to death. The Prussian officer had given him a leather case containing two photographs - and one of them is a dead ringer for the mystery woman in Paris. But who are these people that are now trying to entice him to a remote part of Silesia - and what can they really want with him?

Leo Tolstoy (1828 – 1910) is one of the most famous Russian writers and thinkers and is considered one of the greatest writers in the world, he was acknowledged the head of the Russian literature during his lifetime. His work marked a new stage of the development of the Russian and world’s realism and created a bridge between the classic novel of the XIX century and the literature of the XX century. The story "Hatred is Sweet, But God is Strong" is a parable of a kind master and a slave of his who tried to anger him and show to other slaves, that he was just like any other master. However is appears to be a struggle between not two humans, but the ultimate forces. This is a story that everyone will find edifying, but in his or her own way.A SmartTouch Media production.

The Book of wisdom is one of the Old Testament books of the Bible and is classified with a number of other books that have the main purpose of instruction . The author, although many times wrongly attributed to Solomon, was an Alexandrian Jew who was attempting to strengthen the religious commitment of the Hellenistic Jewish community and, if possible, to convert the Gentiles.
The Book Of Wisdom has three main parts: chapters 1-5 stress the superiority of the pious and wise over the godless; chapters 6-9 praise personified Wisdom; and chapters 10-19 illustrate the marvels of Wisdom.
