Summary

In "Ethical Religion," Mohandas K. Gandhi presents a profound philosophical examination of the intersection between ethics and spirituality. Rooted in the context of early 20th-century India, this book articulates Gandhi's vision of a morality anchored in non-violence and truth. Using a lyrical yet accessible style, the text draws upon a rich tapestry of religious traditions, weaving together elements from Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam, to emphasize the universal values of love, compassion, and service. Gandhi's exploration is not merely theoretical; it is a call to practice ethical living as a form of true religion, reflecting his own life of asceticism and commitment to social justice. Gandhi, known as the Mahatma, was a pivotal figure in India's independence movement against colonial rule. His personal journey of faith, marked by spiritual experimentation and political activism, deeply influenced his thinking about the role of ethical conduct in achieving social change. Gandhi's philosophical underpinnings were shaped by his own struggles with the injustices of his time, leading him to champion ethical living as a means of transcending individual and collective suffering. "Ethical Religion" is a must-read for anyone interested in the synthesis of ethics and spirituality, offering timeless insights into how moral principles can be integrated into everyday life. Gandhi's eloquence and commitment to non-violence invite readers to reflect on their own beliefs and actions, challenging us to embrace a path of ethical diligence in our pursuit of a just society.

Psychological manipulation refers to the use of deceptive tactics to influence or control another person's thoughts, emotions, or behavior to achieve personal goals. Unlike straightforward persuasion, manipulation typically involves hidden motives and is often unethical in nature. It can be subtle and difficult to detect, as it operates through psychological pressure rather than overt force or coercion. Manipulators seek to gain an advantage by exploiting others' vulnerabilities, creating confusion, and leading them to make decisions that may not be in their best interest.
At the core of psychological manipulation lies the manipulator’s ability to control or influence another’s perception of reality. This is achieved by distorting facts, using emotional triggers, or intentionally withholding critical information. The manipulator may use charm, guilt, fear, or flattery to establish control, making it hard for the victim to recognize the manipulation until significant damage is done. This is particularly dangerous because it often leads to a breakdown of trust and can leave the victim feeling confused, powerless, and emotionally drained.
Manipulation can occur in any context—personal relationships, workplaces, politics, or media—and often involves a series of calculated tactics. In relationships, a manipulator might use emotional blackmail or gaslighting to make the victim doubt their own perceptions or question their reality. In business or politics, manipulation might involve misleading promises, biased narratives, or using people as pawns to achieve a specific agenda. Regardless of the setting, the manipulator’s objective is the same: to gain an advantage or achieve a goal without the other party’s full awareness or consent.

'Coffin roads' along which bodies were carried for burial are a marked feature of the landscape of the Scottish Highlands and islands – many are now popular walking and cycling routes. This book journeys along eight coffin roads to discover and explore the distinctive traditions, beliefs and practices around dying, death and mourning in the communities which created and used them.
The result is a fascinating snapshot into place and culture. After more than a century when death was very much a taboo subject, this book argues that aspects of the distinctive West Highland and Hebridean way of death and approach to dying and mourning may have something helpful and important to offer to us today.

Routes covered in this book are:
The Kilmartin Valley – the archetypal coffin road in this ritual landscape of the dead.
The Street of the Dead on Iona – perhaps the best known coffin road in Scotland.
Kilearnadil Graveyard, Jura – a perfect example of a Hebridean graveyard.
The coffin road through Morvern to Keil Church, Lochaline - among the best defined and most evocative coffin roads today.
The Green Isle, Loch Shiel, Ardnamurchan - the oldest continuously used burial place anywhere in Europe.
The coffin road on Eigg – with its distinctive 'piper's cairn' where the coffin of Donald MacQuarrie, the 'Great Piper of Eigg', was rested.
The coffin road from Traigh Losgaintir to Loch Stocinis on Harris - popular with walkers and taken as the title for a best-selling thriller by Peter May.
The coffin road on Barra – A detailed study of burial practices on Barra in the early 1950s provides a fascinating record of Hebridean attitudes to dying, death and mourning.

    National Ballot Measures 2024 -...

National Ballot Measures 2024 - Living Democracy is my gift to the country that I love dearly and have always wanted to see it survive, thrive and improve.
Whenever I am forced to listen to a speech made by any of our Congressmen or women, I will often count the number of times they will refer to America as a 'Democracy'. They use that word an average of 15 to 20 times per speech.
They'll say things like - "Democracy is not pretty." Or they'll say, "Democracy is messy and people don't want to see how the sausage is made." Or they will say that people are trying to "end the 'American experiment in Democracy."
Or they'll quote one of the greatest of the founding fathers - Benjamin Franklin who was asked as the signers of of the Constitution were leaving: "Mr. Franklin, what kind of government have you given us?"
And Franklin replied: "A Republic, Madam, if you can keep it."
And so, we can take from this very portentous comment from Ben Franklin that the founding fathers were well aware that there would be forces someday who would try to take even this very modest amount of democracy - a Representative form of Democracy away from us.
It would take almost 250 years for this prediction to come true, but here we are under the threat of a dictatorship that could be forced upon us any minute will certainly spell the end of the American Experiment in Democracy, or it will cause a huge upheaval, perhaps even another Civil War, as many are predicting.
Not if we make a MAJOR IMPROVEMENT in our form of Government. .
Every election more than half of our registered voters sit it out and the reason is that every election we find ourselves voting for the same old same old. With the modern technology we have gained, there is no reason why we cannot vote on National Ballot Measures instead of two men in suits.
