A Thousand Deaths by Jack London - Trapped in a horrifying cycle of death and resurrection, a man becomes the unwilling subject of a mad-mans twisted experiments. A tantalizing tale of science, survival, and the fight for freedom.
John Griffith Chaney, famously known as Jack London, was born in 1876. He was among the first American writers to achieve international fame and financial success through his work. At the age of 21, in 1897, London embarked on a journey to the Klondike during the Gold Rush, an experience that inspired some of his earliest and most successful stories.
In 1899, Jack London was living in poverty, desperately submitting stories in the hope of earning one cent per word, the standard rate for fiction he had read about. When he finally sold a 4,000-word story, he was dismayed to receive only $5.00 for it. Reflecting on this moment, London later wrote, “I was finished—finished as only a very young, very sick, and very hungry young man could be … I would never write again.”
However, that same day, he received a letter from the publisher of The Black Cat, responding to his submission of A Thousand Deaths. The publisher requested permission to cut the story in half and offered $40 if London agreed. London recalled, “It was the equivalent to twenty dollars per thousand, or double the minimum rate. And that is just precisely how and why I stayed by the writing game. Literally, and literarily, I was saved by The Black Cat short story.”

Max Rose-Rodriguez has more important things to do than finishing sixth grade—like stopping the biggest art heist the universe has ever known.

Sixth-grader Max has it rough between tormentors at school and his sick—ever-worsening—mom at home. But then DZ, a strange, tuxedoed man with one shoe, appears to Max from the future and divulges that Max’s mother’s fate is somehow entwined with that of Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night. It’s suddenly clear to Max that any problems he already had on his plate have just gotten bigger.

DZ explains to Max that someone is after The Starry Night. . . and the thief is not bound by the usual laws of time and space.

“I have questions,” Max tells DZ. But DZ can’t offer too many specifics. What he can provide Max is a cryptic to-do list:

Read The Future Time Traveler’s Guide to the Past
    Consider the puffins
Beware the Wretch with obsidian eyes.
    Befriend Vincent van Gogh

Although he’s skeptical, Max tries his very best. After all, he’ll do anything to help his mom. But he soon discovers that The Future Time Traveler’s Guide to the Past has never been published. And he’s not exactly sure where he’s going to find puffins in LA, let alone consider them. He has no idea what a Wretch is. And . . . befriend Vincent van Gogh? DZ is asking the impossible.

Then, one afternoon at the library, Max spots her: Turquoise-haired Maybe Wells, dressed in blue from head to toe, spattered in paint, carrying a skateboard, and sporting a beautiful tattoo of puffins on her right shoulder.

    Max considers those puffins.

And suddenly, achieving the impossible doesn’t seem so farfetched anymore.

In this quirky, clever, and arrestingly heartfelt adventure through time, readers will find themselves cheering for the underdog at every turn—whether that underdog is Max, Maybe, a picnic hippo named Thelma, or a certain post-impressionist who, in 1889, painted his most famous work under a twinkling night sky in Arles.

Living only until her execution at age 17, and ruling England for less than two weeks, Lady Jane Grey is still remembered for her intelligence and steadfast defense of the gospel. Declared by the dying (Protestant) King Edward as his successor to the throne- -instead of his half-sister Mary, as his father's will decreed - -his quick decision caused confusion for Jane's succession, which was quickly overcome by Mary's gathering forces and Naval support. The biography is based on documented facts and avoids the unsubstantiated myths that have woven themselves around Jane (such as the story of the cruel parents)

Spid decides to spend a day fly fishing with his friends, but the ferry isn’t running because of bad weather. So when a kindly stranger offers them a free ride on his big ship, Spid’s delighted. However, nothing is as it seems. And as a fog rolls in across the sea, Spid and the gang find themselves in very deep water …
This audiobook features two songs: 'Sir Francis Duck' and 'The Trip'. You can also find music videos of the songs at https://spidthespider.com and https://www.youtube.com/spidthespider.
Spid is a lowly spider, who wants to better himself, write songs, and marry his girlfriend Bid, though he is prone to hilarious mishaps mostly of his own making. He is hard-working, cool, and a role model for young children. As well as encouraging children to read and love books, Spid's adventures also teach valuable life lessons, including determination and what psychologists call a 'growth mindset' (desire to better oneself and succeed), the importance of friendship, and sustainability. With very creative prose, Spid's adventures are fun for parents, and teachers to read to, and with, their children. They present lots of opportunities to invest dramatic license thus helping adults and children interact and engage. The humour works at multiple levels from silly and slapstick to more sophisticated wordplay and concepts. Thus, children will discover more and enjoy reading the stories multiple times.
