Summary

Urban Poverty Dynamics explores the complex web of factors driving concentrated poverty in urban areas, linking it to rural-urban migration and strains on social structures. The book examines economic opportunities, housing affordability, and social mobility, highlighting how deindustrialization and discriminatory housing policies have shaped urban landscapes. One key insight is that the spatial concentration of poverty isn't random but results from systemic inequalities. The book argues for moving beyond individual explanations of poverty to address the structural forces that perpetuate it. Analyzing data from sources like the U.S. Census Bureau alongside interviews with residents and policy experts, the book reveals how zoning regulations, public housing policies, and gentrification limit housing options for low-income families. It also emphasizes the limitations of place-based strategies.

Structured to provide a comprehensive examination, the book begins by defining key concepts, explores urban labor markets, analyzes housing markets, and examines barriers to upward mobility. The concluding chapters offer recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders, providing a framework for analyzing root causes and designing effective interventions promoting inclusive urban development. The book directly addresses ongoing debates surrounding government intervention and the effectiveness of anti-poverty programs.

The COVID-19 pandemic has reorganized existing methods of exchange, turning comparatively marginal technologies into the new normal. Multipoint videoconferencing in particular has become a favored means for web-based forms of remote communication and collaboration without physical copresence. Taking the recent mainstreaming of videoconferencing as its point of departure, this anthology examines the complex mediality of this new form of social interaction. Connecting theoretical reflection with material case studies, the contributors question practices, politics and aesthetics of videoconferencing and the specific meanings it acquires in different historical, cultural and social contexts.

In America, either rights come from God—or they don't. This is the ultimate war, and God-Given or Bust tells how patriots can win.

American exceptionalism is rooted in the idea that individual rights come from God and government is only in place to preserve and protect those rights. But America's losing sight of that concept. America's turning into a country where the government grants rights and privileges to only those the government deems worthy—and takes them from those it deems unworthy. This is not how the Founding Fathers envisioned the nation; this is not how the concept of inalienable rights coming from a Creator works. Rather, this is how Marxism, communism, and collectivism spread.

If we want a nation that's free for generations to come, then we must reclaim the notion of God-given and ditch the idea of government-granted. The only way to do that is for Americans of faith to rise up and inject biblical values and godly principles into government, culture, and society, and put God once again at the center. It's time to demand the God-given—or the great American experiment will come to an end.

    Watergate: The Scandal That...

Increasingly and mistakenly viewed as a single scandal within the United States government, what is commonly referred to as the Watergate scandal serves as an overarching term for a series of scandals beginning in 1971 and extending through 1974, although more than any other, it refers to the specific break-in at the Watergate Hotel and office complex in Washington, D.C. The crisis, originating in a secretive battle between the two major political parties, the Nixon White House’s paranoia, and the ensuing conflict concerning the release of confidential information to the public, induced senior government officials into committing crimes (most notoriously petty burglary) and coverups for the purposes of character assassination and inter-political espionage, and it ultimately resulted in the first and only resignation of a sitting American president, Richard Milhous Nixon. Watergate has since become so synonymous with scandal that “gate” is typically added to the end of words associated with scandals even today.
In the wake of the seemingly peculiar burglary, gradual media and judicial pursuits of the thread of scandals led from one thing to another over the following years until it began to culminate with Congressional impeachment proceedings and a momentous showdown between the President and the Supreme Court over the release of presidential tapes, a moment in which Nixon seriously considered defying the Court and initiating a constitutional crisis. When he at last surrendered them, excerpts were blatantly missing, most famously an 18 minute stretch. Given the flurry of activities, it has only been in recent years that historians have gained a full measure of the nation’s perilous status during the intense battle between the various branches of the federal government, and the American public’s view of government in general took a decidedly negative turn.
