The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel by American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. Set in the Jazz Age on Long Island, near New York City, the novel depicts first-person narrator Nick Carraway's interactions with mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and Gatsby's obsession to reunite with his former lover, Daisy Buchanan.
The novel was inspired by a youthful romance Fitzgerald had with socialite Ginevra King, and the riotous parties he attended on Long Island's North Shore in 1922. Following a move to the French Riviera, Fitzgerald completed a rough draft of the novel in 1924. He submitted it to editor Maxwell Perkins, who persuaded Fitzgerald to revise the work over the following winter. After making revisions, Fitzgerald was satisfied with the text, but remained ambivalent about the book's title and considered several alternatives. Painter Francis Cugat's cover art greatly impressed Fitzgerald, and he incorporated aspects of it into the novel.
After its publication by Scribner's in April 1925, The Great Gatsby received generally favorable reviews, though some literary critics believed it did not equal Fitzgerald's previous efforts. Compared to his earlier novels, Gatsby was a commercial disappointment, selling fewer than 20,000 copies by October, and Fitzgerald's hopes of a monetary windfall from the novel were unrealized. When the author died in 1940, he believed himself to be a failure and his work forgotten.

"The world was changing, but it was not ending."

Spanning nearly five centuries of transformation, Sir Charles Oman's classic work deconstructs the myth of the "Dark Ages" as a period of mere ignorance. Instead, he reveals a vibrant, violent, and crucial era where the wreckage of the Roman Empire was forged into the foundations of modern Europe. From the deposition of Romulus Augustulus to the death of Charles the Fat, Oman provides a sweeping narrative of the men and movements that shaped the West.

The Clash of Civilizations: Oman masterfully tracks the rise and fall of dynasties. Witness the struggle of the Byzantine Empire to hold the East against the rising tide of Islam, the brutal expansion of the Frankish kings, and the terrifying shadow of the Viking raids. This is a history of grand strategy and battlefield tactics, where the author's expertise in military history shines through every chapter.

The Pillars of the Middle Ages: Beyond the battlefield, The Dark Ages explores the intellectual and religious shifts of the era. Follow the influence of the papacy, the preservation of classical knowledge in monasteries, and the administrative genius of Charlemagne's Renaissance. Oman proves that this was an age of intense creativity and political evolution, setting the stage for the Crusades and the feudal system that would follow.

History written with the precision of a scholar and the soul of a storyteller. Purchase "The Dark Ages" today and rediscover the roots of the Western world.

"Fromm crossed the boundaries of traditional disciplines to expound his view on the alienation of man in an increasingly technological world." —Newsweek

Erich Fromm's basic idea was to look at the individual as a social being, and to look at society as an ensemble of many individuals who have not only mutual ideas and convictions based on a common practice of life, but also a shared psychic structure. With his concept of "social character," Fromm created a new interdisciplinary thinking presented in this compendium.

The Erich Fromm Reader exhibits the true genius of an original thinker in seeing the connections between overlapping knowledge from many different fields. Here, interdisciplinarity is not only a lip service but the impact of Erich Fromm's unique social psychological notion.
