The Han Dynasty, lasting from 206 BCE to 220 CE, is one of the most significant periods in Chinese history, shaping the culture, politics, and identity of China for centuries. It followed the brief but influential Qin Dynasty, which had laid the foundations for imperial rule but also faced internal strife and rebellion. The Han emerged as the new power, restoring stability and expanding China's borders, making significant contributions to science, technology, trade, and philosophy.
The dynasty's rise was primarily due to the leadership of Liu Bang, a former peasant who became Emperor Gaozu. He defeated his rival, Xiang Yu, and took control of the vast Qin Empire, establishing the Han Dynasty. Gaozu's leadership marked the beginning of a new era, one that would see the consolidation of power and the implementation of reforms that would shape the future of the empire.
The Han Dynasty’s political structure was deeply influenced by the collapse of the Qin Dynasty. Emperor Gaozu restored the decentralized feudal system of governance, but with modifications to ensure more central control. Over time, the emperors of the Han Dynasty would strengthen the centralized bureaucracy, establishing a model that would endure for centuries in imperial China. One of the key developments was the introduction of Confucianism as the state philosophy. Confucian ideals, emphasizing hierarchy, duty, and moral governance, became deeply embedded in the political and social structure of the Han Empire. Confucian scholars played an essential role in the administration, and the dynasty itself was viewed as a time when the state was governed by virtuous and learned rulers.

Spid, Bid and Herman have been away on holiday. But when they get home again, they discover something rather sinister – they seem to have brought back more than just their luggage. This audiobook features two songs: 'I love to wash my hands' and 'Celebrate'. You can also find three more songs linked to the book and music videos of the songs at https://spidthespider.com and https://www.youtube.com/spidthespider. Spid is a lowly spider, who wants to better himself, write songs, and marry his girlfriend Bid, though he is prone to hilarious mishaps mostly of his own making. He is hard-working, cool, and a role model for young children. As well as encouraging children to read and love books, Spid's adventures also teach valuable life lessons, including determination and what psychologists call a 'growth mindset' (desire to better oneself and succeed), the importance of friendship, and sustainability. With very creative prose, Spid's adventures are fun for parents, and teachers to read to, and with, their children. They present lots of opportunities to invest dramatic licence thus helping adults and children interact and engage. The humour works at multiple levels from silly and slapstick to more sophisticated wordplay and concepts. Thus, children will discover more and enjoy reading the stories multiple times. "The Modules Operandi of Jezebel" is a gripping exploration of manipulation, power, and ambition, woven through the story of a complex and enigmatic protagonist. Jezebel, both alluring and dangerous, operates in a world where control and deception are her greatest tools. This book is classic, delving into the strategies and psychological tactics Jezebel employs to navigate her way through a web of intricate relationships, shifting alliances, and moral ambiguity among brethren, and the world at large. With each chapter, readers are pulled deeper into the acts of Jezebel, revealing her calculated moves and the lengths she’s willing to go to achieve her goals. This narrative not only examines the dark allure of power but also points the genealogy of Jezebel and raises thought-provoking questions about identity, influence, and the consequences of dangerous ambition.

The craft of craft, the art of craft - here in Canada we're just starting to really talk about these things. In March 1999, Jean Johnson, who runs Toronto's Craft Studio at Harbourfront Centre, organized a wildly successful symposium on the state of craft in Canada. Curators, writers, critics, academics and craftspeople spoke about all aspects of craft: history, practice, theory, criticism. Taken together, these papers create a clear picture of the vibrant crafts scene in Canada.

The symposium was a groundbreaking event, a first in Canada, offering to the crafts community a new depth of consideration. The book, too, is a Canadian first, and it will allow a dialogue about the academic side of the craft movement to continue.

Each of the book's three sections, History, Theory and Critical Writing, contains a keynote paper and essays by experts in each field, including Mark Kingwell writing 'On Style,' Blake Gopnik on 'Reviewing Craft Exhibitions for the Art Pages,' and Robin Metcalfe addressing 'Teacup Readings: Contextualizing Craft in the Art Gallery.'

An illuminating exploration of 31 incredible women—across art, architecture, dance, literature, and more—whose culture-defining contributions have, until now, been overshadowed by their role as "muses" to history's better-known men.  What does it mean to be someone's "muse"? Historically, to be called a “muse” among artistic circles has been marketed as a flattering title. It is a commendation that most often refers to a woman whose vivacity and beauty are the source of inspiration for a (usually) male artist or creator. Perhaps her inspiring presence is even credited in the story of his success. But the very concept of a muse underestimates these women and their abilities. At its root, muse is a support role, the title a consolation prize that claims to recognize a woman’s greatness—but only in her support of another.I'm Not Your Muse reclaims the narrative of 31 of these extraordinary women, from "The Mother of the Movies" Alice Guy-Blaché to Modernist designer Eileen Gray, prima ballerina Maria Tallchief, storied Harlem Renaissance editor Jessie Redmon Fauset, and many more. Each of these women advanced the narrative of culture and society, pushing the boundaries of visual arts, dance and movement, commercial architecture, music, journalism, and the performing arts. Whether by historical accident or cruel design, their contributions have historically been overshadowed by those of their male counterparts, and often collaborators. In this briskly written, incisively researched compendium, author and researcher Lori Zimmer repositions these women as the main characters of their own lives. Each profile is accented with original illustrations—including jaunty portraits in playfully constructed frames—by artist Maria Krasinski. Together, they highlight the contemporary accomplishments and historical legacies of a wide-ranging group of revolutionary women. Featured women include: Louise Blanchard Bethune Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore Minnette de Silva Clara Driscoll Jessie Redmon Fauset Loie Fuller Martha Gellhorn    Eileen Gray Belle da Costa Greene Alice Guy-Blaché Miss La La Edmonia Lewis Neysa McMein Hildreth Meière Lucia Moholy May and Jane Morris    Na Hye-Sŏk Fernande Olivier Pan Yuliang    Ethel Reed    Clara Rockmore    Ada Bricktop Smith Maria Tallchief Alice B.
