Summary

"The conclusion was undeniable: If I wanted to stay alive, I would have to become a chimera" This novel begins with the aim of understanding the transformations I was undergoing as I became a human chimera, medical term used for persons who have received an organ transplant. The name comes from the mythological monster composed of the union of several animals. Patients who suffer through a transplant procedure also feel like a monster as their body goes through a drastic and painful transformation. This book intends to understand this process by blending historical reviews, fiction stories, and autobiographical accounts.
The chapters combine different styles and provide distinct approaches to a complex topic, helping the reader to understand the meaning of these recently developed human beings. Even more, the book expands the term and provides examples of architectural and geopolitical chimeras showing that generating new creatures by merging two realities may help to solve previously unsolvable problems. In fact, this book in itself is a linguistic chimera that relies on the union of different views to bring to the present this ancient word.

Half-memoir, half-biography, Wake The Others wrestles with the legacy of the Salvadoran Civil War. Blending lyric and narrative, Palomo traces his mother’s childhood, war experiences, family separation, migration, and its aftermath. Political without sacrificing craft, confessional without navel-gazing, this debut collection of poetry guides readers through the quagmire of family secrets to a place where healing is possible.
"Willy Palomo’s outstanding debut takes a scalpel to the heart of biography as a genre, cuts through to the arteries of inherited nostalgia for a motherland, and opens the capillaries of a mama, abuela, and bisabuela’s traumas. This book is a gut wrenching family narrative of the history of violence in El Salvador and a family’s journey north in hope of stability and the possibility of joy. Palomo’s poems are an important and unique addition to the growing voice of Central American writers in the United States.”

It is said that books are written to bring sunshine into our dull, grey lives – to show us places we want to escape to, lives we want to live, people we want to love. But there are also stories that can only be found in the deepest, darkest corners of the library. Stories about the unexplained, of lost souls, of things that go bump before the silence. Before the screaming.
And some stories just disappear. Stories printed in old newspapers, broadcast live on the wireless, sometimes not even published at all – these are the stories you cannot find on even the dustiest of library shelves.
This follow-up volume to the bestselling Ghosts from the Library resurrects forgotten tales of the supernatural by some of the most accomplished mystery authors of all time. Close the windows. Draw the curtains. Just don’t let the lights go out…
Tony Medawar, a top editor in the realm of fiction, presents Wicked Spirits, a collection of horror and crime stories that delve into the unexplained and the supernatural. These anthologies, steeped in traditional storytelling, are a must-read for fans of detective thrillers.

Skirly Crag: a hill in the Scottish highlands, in the heart of which nestles a very special lochan.
Helen Percy's working life as a shepherd takes her away from her home in the lee of her beloved Skirly Crag for many months of the year.
Forget beribboned Bo-Peep dresses. Think instead unbecoming waterproofs, the same shirt worn for a week, jeans smeared with gobs of birth-fluid and mustard-coloured lamb-skitter. Calf-length crinoline gowns are so out of fashion for the modern shepherdess!
Why do I do this job, I ask myself? Why am I up at sparrow's fart each day, with no days off, a pitiful rate of pay and bosses who are variously cantankerous, cussed or crazy?
Then there is a rare day on the hill when the lark rises into the clear air above Skirly Crag, thrilling the glen with its reedy melody, and all is well with the world.
