Summary

Foreword by Danny Dorling.
Through revealing and forthright interviews with 14 secretaries of state from Kenneth Baker to Michael Gove and Gavin Williamson, together with many other leading figures in education Tim Brighouse and Mick Waters provide fascinating insights into the various evolutions and revolutions that have taken place in English state education since 1976.
In so doing they highlight key areas for improvement and assess where we should go from here to enable teachers and schools to improve the learning and broaden the horizons of each and every one of their pupils whatever their talents, challenges, advantages or problems.
Tim and Mick have both spent a lifetime in state-provided education first as pupils, then as teachers, and finally in various leadership and policy-making positions, both in and out of schools. About Our Schools is born out of their shared love for education and their appreciation of how schooling can be a transformative element in the lives of children and young people.

Teleology is the study of purpose, design, and goal-directedness in nature. It is a concept that has shaped philosophical, scientific, and theological discourse for centuries, offering explanations for why things exist and function the way they do. The term itself comes from the Greek word telos, meaning "end" or "goal," and logos, meaning "study" or "reason." At its core, teleology seeks to explain natural phenomena by considering their intended purpose or final cause rather than merely their material composition or mechanical processes. This perspective has been a fundamental part of human thought, influencing fields as diverse as biology, ethics, cosmology, and psychology.
The significance of teleology lies in its ability to provide a framework for understanding the apparent order and directionality in the world. From the intricate adaptations of biological organisms to the finely tuned laws of the universe, teleological reasoning has historically been used to argue for the presence of intentionality or inherent purpose in natural systems. Philosophers such as Aristotle, who introduced the concept of final causes, and later thinkers like Thomas Aquinas, who integrated teleology into theological arguments, viewed the natural world as inherently purposeful. Even in modern times, teleological thinking persists in various scientific discussions, particularly in debates surrounding evolution, complexity, and emergent phenomena.

Harriet Tubman (March 10, 1822-- March tenth, 1913) was an abolitionist and political activist in the United States. Tubman, who was born into slavery, got away and went on to free around 70 enslaved people, which includes family members and good friends, through the Underground Rail Road, a network of antislavery activists and safe houses. She worked for the Union Army as an armed scout and spy throughout the American Civil War. Tubman was an activist in the women's suffrage movement in her last years.
Tubman was chained as a kid in Dorchester County, Maryland, and was maltreated and whipped by her different masters. She got a horrible head injury as a kid when an angered overseer tossed a very big metal weight at another shackled individual, but it struck her instead. Lightheadedness, pain, and hypersomnia were all signs of the damage, which she experienced for the remainder of her life.
Tubman started having odd visions and extreme bad nightmares after her injuries, which she credited to divine forewarnings. She ended up being earnestly spiritual because of these experiences, which she coupled with her Methodist childhood.
Slavery in those days was a serious issue. Harriet Tubman’s tragic but heroic story, in this historical context, is definitely worth studying.
