Summary

My goal in this writing is to promote social consciousness and increase awareness and understanding of the “human condition” that we all share, and that ultimately binds us all in our future, and our fate. I endeavor to pursue that goal with a series of discussions on how we think, how we learn, and how we communicate against the backdrop of our own individual consciousness, and to do so in an accessible manner. These discussions will leverage similarities of the human brain to neural networks in computing and artificial intelligence – as it has become increasingly important recently to understand these concepts.

Extreme polarization in American politics is perhaps the most confounding political phenomenon of our time. This book binds together polarization in Congress and polarization in the electorate within an ever-expanding feedback loop. This loop is powered by the discipline exerted by the respective political parties on their Congressional members and district candidates and endorsed by the voters in each Congressional district who must choose between the alternatives offered. Tight national party discipline produces party delegations in Congress that are widely separated from one another but each ideologically narrowly distributed. 
 
 
 
As district constituencies become more polarized and are egged on by activists, parties are further motivated to appeal to their respective bases rather than to voters in the ideological center. America has indeed acquired parties with clear platforms—once thought to be a desirable goal—but these parties are now feuding camps. What resolution might there be? Just as the progressive movement slowly replaced the Gilded Age, might a new reform effort replace the current squabble? Or could an asymmetry develop in the partisan constraints that would lead to ascendancy of the center, or might a new and over-riding issue generate a cross-cutting dimension, opening the door to a new politics? Only the future will tell.

The financial crisis of 2008 did not erupt overnight. It was the result of years of risky practices, unchecked speculation, and systemic flaws in the global financial system. The road to this crisis began with an unsustainable boom in the housing market that created a false sense of economic prosperity and security. For many Americans, owning a home became not just a dream but an expectation—one fueled by easy credit, low interest rates, and the rise of complex financial products that few truly understood.
In the years leading up to the crisis, financial institutions began issuing mortgages to borrowers with poor credit histories, known as subprime borrowers. These loans carried higher interest rates and were often approved without proper verification of income or assets. As more people were granted these loans, demand for housing skyrocketed, driving up home prices and encouraging even more lending. Lenders, seeking higher profits, bundled these risky mortgages into securities and sold them to investors around the world.
Wall Street played a major role in escalating the crisis. Investment banks repackaged these mortgages into financial instruments such as mortgage-backed securities (MBS) and collateralized debt obligations (CDOs). These were sold with high credit ratings, despite being backed by increasingly shaky loans. The belief that housing prices would continue to rise allowed many to ignore the growing risks. Financial institutions, government regulators, and even investors failed to recognize—or chose to overlook—the signs of impending collapse.
