Sinossi

Mockery Forms examines mockery's complex role in politics and society, arguing it's more than simple derision; it's a social mechanism that both reinforces and subverts power. The book explores how different forms of mockery—from playful teasing to malicious satire—affect targets, instigators, and the public, underscoring the ethical considerations involved. Understanding these nuances is crucial because each type has varying impacts on ethical considerations, and its power to effect change.

The book progresses through three sections: establishing a theoretical framework, offering empirical analysis of historical and contemporary examples, and exploring ethical implications. Case studies range from ancient political comedies to modern internet memes, illustrating mockery's enduring power. It analyzes the intent and execution of each type, as well as their respective consequences.

This multidisciplinary approach, drawing from philosophy, political science, and sociology, makes Mockery Forms valuable for students, researchers, and general readers interested in the power dynamics of public discourse and the subtle art of social commentary. It offers a nuanced analysis, challenging simplistic views of ridicule in shaping our world.

The lives of five socialist women and their legacy for modern-day feminists

Red Valkyries explores the history of socialist feminism in Eastern Europe. Through the revolutionary careers of five prominent socialist women active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries—the aristocratic Bolshevik Alexandra Kollontai; the radical pedagogue Nadezhda Krupskaya; the polyamorous firebrand Inessa Armand; the deadly sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko; and the partisan, scientist, and global women's activist Elena Lagadinova—Kristen Ghodsee tells the story of the personal challenges faced by earlier generations of radicals.

None of these women was a perfect leftist. Their lives were filled with inner conflicts, contradictions, and sometimes outrageous privilege. But they managed to fight for their own political projects with perseverance and dedication. Always walking a fine line between the need for class solidarity and the desire to force their sometimes callous male colleagues to take women's issues seriously, these women pursued novel solutions with many lessons for those who might follow in their footsteps.

During the Middle Ages, the nations of Europe forged new identities, moving away from the lost glory of the Roman Empire toward their own distinct character. The process was often clumsy and uneven, as emerging nations developed at their own pace, struggling to replace Rome's protection with strength of their own. What they did share was the Roman Catholic Church, which defined itself as the spiritual protector of Christian believers. But the dutiful Christians of the Middle Ages, who sought orthodoxy and largely obeyed papal rule, began to change once the Middle Ages ended. The Renaissance, or rebirth, was a period when Europeans began questioning what they had long been told was sacrosanct. Through art, invention, science, literature, and theology, the nations of Europe sought answers the Church seemed unwilling, or unable, to provide.
The Church, having become a powerful political entity, was viewed with growing distrust and skepticism; the spread of learning that followed Gutenberg's printing press meant bold new ideas traveled across Europe faster than the Church could silence them. Power-brokering popes could not halt the challenges they faced once a German priest rebelled against corrupt practices masquerading as ecclesiastical authority. As old certainties fell, humanism flourished, inspiring the art of Michelangelo, the science of Vesalius, and the literature of Shakespeare and Cervantes. But the loss of religious uniformity brought terrible conflict: France suffered the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, Spain welcomed the Inquisition to purge heresy, and the Low Countries split between Catholic and Protestant. The Renaissance was a triumph of the human spirit and a testament to human ability, affirming the willingness of men and women to die for the right to think freely.

From the author of I Hate Men, a personal and political reflection on abortion rights.

Discussion about abortion and associated rights are often limited to either "anti-abortion" or "pro-choice," the latter of which focuses on the importance of having the right to choose, rather than on what that right means for real people.

In this timely essay, Pauline Harmange provides an intimate, detailed account of her abortion. Reminiscent of Annie Ernaux's Happening, Abortion is nuanced, complex, honest, and precise. Harmange gives voice to the emotions, reflections, and contradictions that someone could experience when they choose to terminate a pregnancy.

At a time in which women's reproductive rights are being called into question around the world, Abortion is a clarion call, a powerful personal testimony, and a resolutely political vision: to restore power to our experiences, all our experiences, by sharing them, and to transform society for the better.

The real significance of this book lies in the fact that it tells us more about the everyday life of black South Africans. It delves into the essence of black family life and the secret anguish of family members who often battle to cope. – Niq Mhlongo
A secret torment for some, a proud responsibility for others, ‘black tax’ is a daily reality for thousands of black South Africans. In this thought-provoking and moving anthology, a provocative range of voices share their deeply personal stories.
With the majority of black South Africans still living in poverty today, many black middle-class households are connected to working-class or jobless homes. Some believe supporting family members is an undeniable part of African culture and question whether it should even be labelled as a kind of tax.
Others point to the financial pressure it places on black students and professionals, who, as a consequence, struggle to build their own wealth. Many feel they are taking over what is essentially a government responsibility.
The contributions also investigate the historical roots of black tax, the concept of the black family and the black middle class. In giving voice to so many different perspectives, Black Tax hopes to start a dialogue on this widespread social phenomenon.
