Sinopse

Propaganda in Art delves into how art has historically been a tool for political influence and shaping public opinion across various political systems. It examines how political leaders and social movements alike have harnessed visual rhetoric to legitimize power and mobilize supporters. The book argues that art transcends mere aesthetics when used as propaganda, instead becoming a functional instrument within larger power structures.

The book explores how art serves as a means of political legitimation, analyzing examples from ancient empires to modern dictatorships. It also investigates art's role in driving social change, particularly how protest movements have utilized visual media to challenge established power. This exploration includes a look at the ethical dilemmas surrounding artistic freedom and censorship, offering a balanced perspective on these complex issues.

Beginning with a theoretical framework, the book progresses through historical applications and ethical considerations, ultimately equipping readers with the skills to critically evaluate visual messages. By understanding the historical evolution of political systems and the rise of mass media, readers can better discern the subtle ways in which power operates through cultural channels, thereby influencing beliefs and behaviors on a societal scale.

Based on an exhibition at the Nunnery Gallery held in autumn 2024, In the Footsteps of the East London Group brings together 35 original paintings by members of the East London Group, paired with 22 new interpretations and responses from contemporary painters including David Hepher, Doreen Fletcher and Tim Craven.
The East London Group were a group of artists who created paintings in the 1920s and 30s of buildings, streets, and London life. They were mostly working class, realist painters whose formal education had often stopped at an early age. The group developed from an art club at the Bethnal Green Men's Institute to a group of painters who exhibited alongside prominent artists of the day and attracted enormous press coverage and support. They were taught by Walter Sickert, John Albert Cooper, Phyllis Bray, and others.
Curated by the Urban Contemporaries Group, a London-based collective who are interested in exploring the urban experience, the exhibition features 35 original paintings by members of the East London Group alongside 22 contemporary paintings inspired by them, from leading artists working in the urban landscape tradition, including Timothy Hyman, Philippa Beale, Nicole Poh and Marc Gooderham. Each artist selected for the show has a respect and curiosity for the history of the area and for these paintings made on the streets of Bow a hundred years ago, and which open a window onto the past life of east London and an earlier period in British art.
This fascinating book brings together all the images from the exhibition in print, showcasing surprising pairings of paintings from a group of artists that are steadily growing in popularity and reputation with fresh interpretations from a new generation of painters.

By June 1993, when Washington, D.C.'s Fugazi released their third full-length album In on the Kill Taker, the quartet was reaching a thunderous peak in popularity and influence. With two EPs (combined into the classic CD 13 songs) and two albums (1990's genre-defining Repeater and 1991's impressionistic follow-up Steady Diet of Nothing) inside of five years, Fugazi was on creative roll, astounding increasingly large audiences as they toured, blasting fist-pumping anthems and jammy noise-workouts that roared into every open underground heart. When the album debuted on the now-SoundScan-driven charts, Fugazi had never been more in the public eye.Few knew how difficult it had been to make this popular breakthrough. Disappointed with the sound of the self-produced Steady Diet, the band recorded with legendary engineer Steve Albini, only to scrap the sessions and record at home in D.C. with Ted Niceley, their brilliant, under-known producer. Inadvertently, Fugazi chose an unsure moment to make In on the Kill Taker: as Nirvana and Sonic Youth were yanking the American rock underground into the media glare, and “breaking” punk in every possible meaning of the word. Despite all of this, Kill Taker became an alt-rock classic in spite of itself, even as its defiant, muscular sound stood in stark contrast to everything represented by the mainstreaming of a culture and worldview they held dear. This book features new interviews with all four members of Fugazi and members of their creative community.

This anthology of several centuries' worth of great hymns invites us to experience these works as devotional poetry—to slow down and savor their well-turned phrases and evocative language. English professor Leland Ryken provides some historical background for each hymn, but his focus is on literary analysis. Combined with relevant Scripture texts, the result is a wonderfully devotional and poetic study of the Christian faith.
