Summary

Historical Speeches explores the potent influence of oratory, dissecting how pivotal speeches have reshaped history. It reveals how rhetoric, combined with opportune timing, can ignite social transformation and redefine political landscapes. For instance, examining speeches from the American Civil Rights Movement highlights how persuasive rhetoric can galvanize public opinion and inspire social activism. The book uniquely emphasizes the symbiotic relationship between the speech itself and the societal context in which it's delivered, demonstrating that the effectiveness of a speech is deeply rooted in its historical moment.

The book progresses systematically, first introducing core rhetorical devices like metaphor and analogy. It then analyzes these devices in various speeches across different historical periods, from ancient Rome to the 20th century. Each chapter meticulously dissects a speech's content, delivery, and reception, concluding with an assessment of its lasting impact. By providing this comprehensive analysis, the book offers a valuable framework for understanding the enduring relevance of historical speeches in contemporary political discourse.

Visual Friendlies, Tally Target: Surges continues the story of the role of forward air controllers (JTACs) and Close Air Support (CAS), picking up in 2006 and continuing through 2013. This volume covers the evolution of Joint Fires through the colloquial "second phase" of the War on Terror—the "surges" of Iraq in 2007 and Afghanistan in 2010–2011. Vol. II recounts the evolution of air power during the rising counterinsurgencies, as well as the psychology and mental makeup of these exclusive tribes. Notable accounts include the recovery mission of EXTORTION17, the first withdrawal from Iraq, previously unreported missions against insurgent strongholds, and instances where the situational awareness and decision-making of forward air controllers prevented civilian casualties and fratricide.

The story carries with it a continuation of the strategic lessons learned from America's longest war: where tactical successes and innovation failed to achieve a strategic outcome amidst ambiguous grand strategy, flawed policy and a failure to understand the new battlefields of the twenty-first century, as recounted by the men whose air power tribes went into the breach again and again. Volume II concludes as the "War on Terror" nominally ended in 2013, as the final phase of the post-9/11 wars transitioned to the "Train, Advise, and Assist" missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

… "So if I had to summarize the result of my investigation in the briefest form, it would be something like the following: energy is a primal force of unknown origin with a tremendous potential for differentiation. 'Dead' and living matter is increasingly sophisticatedly organized energy. The organizing principle is the world spirit, a limitless abstract potential of possible combinations, which has been realized and materialized in an increasingly differentiated way in the course of evolution from the Big Bang to the present day. Aspects of the world spirit are successively discovered and utilized by living organisms. Both the world spirit and the energy can be understood to be either of divine or natural origin."

In their biography of Pablo Picasso, Hans Ludwig and Chris Jaffe note that “for him, art was always adventure: ‘To find is the thing.’” Indeed, there is perhaps no artist who produced more art than Picasso, whose enormous oeuvre (which spanned most of his 91-year life) contained a countless number of paintings and drawings. Picasso also worked in other mediums as well, notably sculpture and lithography, and his constant experimentation with form makes him a useful case study through which to chart the growth of Modernism as an artistic movement and many of the artistic trends that would dominate the 20th century. At the same time, one of the challenges involved in examining Picasso’s body of work is the sheer breadth of it all.
In his review of Salvador Dali’s first autobiography, George Orwell declared that “One ought to be able to hold in one’s head simultaneously the two facts that Dali is a good draughtsman and a disgusting human being.” Whether or not one agrees with the famous author’s assessment, Orwell captures the polarizing nature of Salvador Dali, and the extent to which his undeniable technical virtuosity often brushed against his penchant for provoking his audiences (not to mention provoking long-entrenched standards of “proper” taste).
To truly grasp the significance of Jackson Pollock in 20th century art, it’s necessary to understand the dramatic departure he initiated away from the straightforward compositions associated with the social realist art of the 1930s, a Depression-era period in which political art offered readily comprehensible narratives that were grasped by viewers with little artistic training.
Few artists of the 20th century were as enigmatic as Andy Warhol, who once remarked, “If you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings and films and me, there I am. There’s nothing behind it.” This statement is hardly out of character for the famous artist.

Here is an extremely rare recording from the BetterListen! archives.
Available in digitlal format for the very first time.
Recorded in NYC in 1991, this recording reflects the wisdom, foresight and brilliance of Dr Timothy Leary.
Timothy Leary believed that a psychedelic experience is a journey to new realms of consciousness. The scope and content of the experience is limitless, but its characteristic features are the transcendence of verbal concepts, of spacetime dimensions, and of the ego or identity. Such experiences of enlarged consciousness can occur in a variety of ways: sensory deprivation, yoga exercises, disciplined meditation, religious or aesthetic ecstasies, or spontaneously.
We hope you enjoy this recording and peak into one of the most interesting minds in recent history.
