Summary

Food Politics Divide explores how food security influenced the French and American Revolutions. It contrasts 18th-century France, plagued by bread shortages, with America, relatively abundant in food, to understand why revolution erupted in one nation but not the other.

The book argues that differing approaches to managing food scarcity and abundance profoundly shaped their political paths. For instance, France's centralized control, including price controls, intensified social inequalities, while America's market-driven system fostered self-reliance.

The book examines government intervention, socioeconomic impacts of food conditions, and public discourse around food security. It reveals how France's policies fueled resentment towards the monarchy, as revolutionary leaders exploited public anxieties about bread. Conversely, America's relative abundance promoted economic opportunity.

Using government records, market reports, and personal letters, the book progresses by contrasting agricultural landscapes, analyzing specific policies, dissecting social consequences, and concluding with an analysis of political rhetoric surrounding food.

The great fire of London is lodged in the collective consciousness, and like other notorious disasters in history, continues to captivate the imaginations of people today. When preparing to write this astounding book, acclaimed author Neil Hanson discovered that there were many facets of the tragedy that remained unexplored. This enthralling, often horrifying narrative is the unforgettable culmination of his studies.

In 1666, London is still recovering from its latest bouts with the bubonic plague, and memories of the Black Death are still fresh. When a small fire breaks out in a downtown bakery, it spreads with alarming speed through the crowded city streets, from one desiccated wooden structure to the next. Becoming a conflagration of epic proportions, the firestorm rages like a dragon and ultimately razes half the city.

Though the fire itself may have been hell on earth, the smoldering aftermath plumbs the depths of depravity like few moments in human history.

Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award Finalist
Every adoption is rooted in loss.
Adoption is often framed by happy narratives, but the reality is that many adoptees struggle with unaddressed trauma and issues of identity and belonging. Adoptees often spend the majority of their youth without the language to explore the grief related to adoption or the permission to legitimize their conflicting emotions.
Adoptee and counselor Cameron Lee Small names the realities of the adoptee's journey, narrating his own and other adoptees' stories in all their complexity. He unpacks the history of how adoption has worked and names how the church influenced adoption practices with unintended negative impacts on adoptees' faith. Small's own tumultuous search for and reunion with his mother in Korea inspired him to help other adoptees navigate what it means to carry multiple stories. His adoptee-centered advocacy helps adoptees regain their agency and identity on a journey of integration and healing, with meaningful relationships in all their family systems.

The Chuang Tsu is one of the most important books in Chinese literature and philosophy. It is one of the two foundational texts of Daoism. Also titled Zhuangzi, it is a commentary and extension of the Dao de Jing/Tao Te Ching, in the same way that Mencius' Analects are an exploration of Confucius' thought. Written in around 300BCE during the Warring States period, it is a collection of anecdotes, fables, and stories that are as silly and funny as they are profound and thought provoking.Where the Dao De Jing is a distilled and poetic exploration of the Way, Zhuangi takes a much more human and real-world path through the mysteries of the Dao. Using often humorous anecdotes, allegories, parables and fables mixed with conversations about particular aspects of the Way.James Legge’s translation is perhaps the most sophisticated and exacting one in existence. It carries as much as possible of the subtlety and detail in the original masterwork. It is regarded as one of the greatest literary works in all of Chinese history, and has been called "the most important pre-Qin text for the study of Chinese literature." Its main themes are of spontaneity in action and of freedom from the human world and its conventions. The fables and anecdotes in the text illustrate the illusion of distinctions between good and bad, large and small, life and death, and human and nature. While other ancient Chinese philosophers focused on moral and personal duty, Zhuangzi promoted carefree wandering and becoming one with "the Way" (Dào 道) by following nature. It has influenced great Chinese and Western writers for more than 2000 years, including Oscar Wilde, Yeats, Nietzsche, Sima Xiangru, Li Bai, Su Shi and Lu You.
