Inspector Cameron Rande is head of Homicide in Toronto's Police Service but he doesn't want to be chained to a desk. He assigns himself to head the investigation into the murder of a high-profile developer in one of Toronto's modern skyscrapers with a bullet from an ancient rifle. Rande and his team are soon plunged into a double murder probe as a contractor is beaten to death with a musical instrument out of the 1950s. Both deaths are tied to The Revelle, a downtown, iconic theatre, which had been slated for demolition by the dead men. Rande and his college-bound daughter Amelia then meet Estelle Croft, an actress who starred at The Revelle in its heyday in plays like Bell, Book and Candle. Estelle becomes the strangest suspect Rande had ever met. She introduces Cam and Amelia Rande to Franklin, her mysterious manservant, and to Denny Croft. Actually, Denny is a ghost. Estelle's former husband is interred in a crypt in Estelle's big house downtown, but pops out regularly to read books and talk with his wife. Amelia takes to Estelle and, eventually, Denny, but Rande tries to avoid believing in spirits. His detectives are attacked at the theatre as they tie the murder weapons to The Revelle's huge storage room. Rande then finds the theatre is haunted by another former actor and war hero Frank Cavello who died at the Revelle decades before. It is Frank who leads Rande to his prime suspect. It is also Frank who is the Ghost waiting in the wings. This is an intricate murder mystery set in North America's fourth largest city. It's also a ghost story of unrequited love between actors and of a marvelous theatre that just won't die. Thrills, chills and romance.

This debut horror novel by the author of acclaimed short story collection Monstrous Affections “establishes him as a worthy heir to the mantle of Stephen King” (National Post).   Set in 1911, Eutopia “mixes utopian vision, rustic Americana, and pure creepiness. . . . Nickle blends Little House on the Prairie with distillates of Rosemary’s Baby and The X-Files to create a chilling survival-of-the-fittest story” (Publishers Weekly).   Situated on the edge of the woods and mountains of northern Idaho, the tiny settlement of Eliada is an industrialist’s attempt to create heaven on earth. But its secrets are soon to be unveiled, as Jason Thistledown, the sole survivor of a mysterious plague in Montana, and Andrew Waggoner, a black doctor nearly lynched by the KKK, delve beneath the façade of the utopian mill town. What they discover is science warped by ideology—and an unearthly monster that preys on the faith of its own true believers . . .   “A story of piano-wire suspense, grotesque horrors, and, above all, visceral insight into the race politics of American horror, and how they are bound up with the American project itself.” —Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing  Praise for David Nickle   “His stories are dark, wildly imaginative, and deeply compassionate—even when they’re laced with righteous anger.” —Nathan Ballingrud, author of Wounds “David Nickle is Canada’s answer to Stephen King. His writing charms even as it slices like a blade between the ribs: sharp, subtle, and never less than devastating.” —Helen Marshall, author of Gifts for the One Who Comes After

In the middle of the American Second Civil War, born with a face that is half black and half white, Jetta belongs nowhere. In New Orleans, where she lives with her grandmother after her parents' death, she is believed to be a demon come to curse them all. Everywhere in the town, the blacks—or people of any color—are being persecuted and, one day, Jetta is moved by the white military and shipped outside of the city walls to live in a closed ghetto along with the rest of New Orleans' many blacks.
But Jetta is not black. She is not white either, and hiding who you really are isn't easy in a world where race defines everything.
In the ghetto, she teams up with Tyler and soon they find an escape, only to end up having to hide until they finally manage to find their way to the black-controlled territories, where they believe they might be protected from the war.
But wherever Jetta goes, all she sees is despair and division. People are fighting and soon she starts to ask questions about who she really is—and why her dead grandmother keeps following her. Next, she ventures on a journey to find her real parents and real origin and the powers given to her from them.
