Sinopsis

First Street Photos explores the origins of street photography, revealing how early photographers captured candid moments of everyday life and offering a unique perspective on social history. Venturing beyond formal studio portraits, these pioneers used technological advancements like portable cameras to document unscripted realities in urban environments. The book highlights how these images shifted image-making from staged representations to capturing the essence of daily life, influencing our understanding of the past and shaping contemporary photographic practices.

This book examines the diverse motivations and approaches of early street photographers, from those documenting poverty to artists finding beauty in the mundane. It addresses critical questions about privacy, representation, and power dynamics, highlighting the ethical considerations inherent in documentary photography.

Structured around core themes, the book progresses through chapters analyzing technological advancements, photographer motivations, and public responses, supported by detailed analyses of specific photographs and historical circumstances. The book argues that early street photography both reflected and shaped the social landscape, challenging purely objective views of photography.

By drawing on primary sources like original photos and photographers' journals, as well as secondary scholarship, First Street Photos offers fresh insights into social agency, empowering both photographers and subjects in shaping the visual narrative of their time, and making it valuable for photography enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

Indian Creek Massacre and Captivity of Hall Girls was written by Charles Martin Scanlan in 1915. The Indian Creek Massacre arose in 1832 at LaSalle County, Illinois, after a dispute about a settler-constructed dam that blocked fish from reaching a Native American village downstream. It’s a unique historical snapshot of early America centered around Sylvia and Rachel Hall, sisters who were the only survivors of the massacre and were abducted, as well as the story of Chief Shabona who was a member of the Ottowa and Potawatomi.
This audiobook is narrated by Sylvia’s great-great-great-granddaughter, Rebecca Cook, with help from her sister Gwendelyn Gilchrist. The written book itself is in public domain and can be downloaded with photos for free from Project Gutenberg at gutenberg.com.

"The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting."

Written over two thousand years ago, Sun Tzu's insights remain as sharp and relevant today as they were in ancient China. The Art of War is not merely a book about military maneuvers; it is a profound philosophical study of human nature and the mechanics of conflict. Across thirteen concise chapters, Sun Tzu teaches the importance of intelligence, the value of flexibility, and the necessity of knowing both yourself and your opponent. It is a guide to achieving victory through the path of least resistance, emphasizing that the most successful "warrior" is the one who understands how to outmaneuver the competition before the first blow is even struck.

The Five Essentials for Victory: Sun Tzu identifies five critical factors that determine the outcome of any engagement: The Moral Law (Purpose), Heaven (Timing), Earth (Terrain), Command (Leadership), and Method (Organization). By mastering these variables, a leader can predict the outcome of a conflict with startling accuracy.

Victory Through Deception and Adaptability: "All warfare is based on deception." Sun Tzu argues that a successful strategist must be like water—shapeless, flowing around obstacles, and striking only where the enemy is weak. This focus on psychological warfare and environmental awareness makes the text a masterclass in high-stakes decision-making.

Why It Is a Global Icon: The Art of War has transcended its origins to become a universal manual for survival and success. Whether you are navigating a corporate merger, coaching a sports team, or seeking personal discipline, Sun Tzu's aphorisms provide a framework for clear thinking under pressure. It is the ultimate toolkit for anyone who wishes to turn obstacles into opportunities.

This radical and rigorous rethinking of the traditional MBA program combines solid business principles with a commitment to environmental and social justice.

Many current and aspiring entrepreneurs are looking for a solid business education that also deeply aligns with their progressive values. Based on a course field-tested with over 500 students, this book fills that gap. It covers traditional topics such as business strategy and structure, finance, marketing, recruiting, and branding from a socially just and environmentally regenerative perspective. And it also touches on topics such as strategies to reverse climate change, nonviolent communication, self-managing organizations, locally self-reliant economies, racial justice, and more.

Traditional MBA programs are based on outdated principles that were developed during the Industrial Revolution-and they can be hugely expensive. Sustainable MBA programs, while laudable, are too incremental to make a sufficient impact. The Next Economy MBA is for entrepreneurs seeking to make business an active force for good. It draws on the authors' experience of working with over 300 social enterprises, from small organizations like Winona's Hemp and Heritage Farm to household names like Ben & Jerry's and Patagonia.

Our current economy, what the authors call the "Business as Usual Economy," has created a massive wealth gap, a climate crisis, racial division, and needless housing, food, and healthcare shortages. This book shows how businesses can pave the way to a Next Economy that meets the basic needs of all people and restores and protects the planetary ecosystem.

In Heavyweight, Jordana Moore Saggese examines images of Black heavyweight boxers to map the visual terrain of racist ideology in the United States, paying particular attention to the intersecting discourses of Blackness, masculinity, and sport. Looking closely at the "shadow archive" of portrayals across fine art, vernacular imagery, and public media at the turn of the twentieth century, she demonstrates how the images of boxers reveal the racist stereotypes implicit in them, many of which continue to structure ideas of Black men today. With a focus on both anonymous fighters and notorious champions, including Jack Johnson, Saggese contends that popular images of these men provided white spectators a way to render themselves experts on Blackness and Black masculinity. These images became the blueprint for white conceptions of the Black male body—existing between fear and fantasy, simultaneously an object of desire and an instrument of violence. Reframing boxing as yet another way whiteness establishes the violent mythology of its supremacy, Saggese highlights the role of imagery in normalizing a culture of anti-Blackness.
