Summary

Beneath the peeling paint and wrought-iron balconies of The Eldridge, a pre-war brownstone in the heart of Brooklyn, whispers a legacy of immigrant dreams and blue-collar grit.  But this vibrant community faces a new threat, not just from predatory developers but from a secret buried deep beneath their feet.Elena Rodriguez, a Cuban seamstress haunted by memories of Castro's Cuba, finds solace in the vibrant fabrics that overflow her apartment. Across the hall, Theodore English, a recovering addict, desperately clings to hope, rebuilding his life piece by piece to the rhythmic tap-tap-tap of his hammer, a lullaby for his musically gifted daughter, Beatrice.  On the top floor, Agnes Gillespie, an elderly artist, hides a secret life: she's the linchpin of a modern-day Underground Railroad, sheltering families caught in the crosshairs of gentrification.Their fragile peace shatters with an eviction notice from Goliath Corp, delivered by one of their own: Marcus Cole, a former resident returned with the polished veneer of success and a mission to convince his old neighbors to sell. Is he a pawn or a player in a deeper game?  His presence ignites old neighborhood rivalries, exposing fault lines of race, class, and simmering resentments.Leading the charge against Goliath is Eleanor Meza, a seasoned community organizer haunted by a past failure. She sees in the Eldridge not just a building but a symbol of resistance against corporate greed.  As Eleanor rallies the tenants, a chance discovery reveals the true depth of the building’s history: a network of tunnels, a forgotten relic of the Underground Railroad, lies hidden beneath their feet.Their fight transforms from an eviction dispute into a battle for historical preservation. Theodore rediscovers his carpentry skills, Beatrice’s music becomes a rallying cry, and Elena stitches coded messages of defiance into protest banners, weaving a tapestry of resistance.  But unity is fragile. Some waver, tempted by Goliath's promises.  Old rivalries resurface, fueled by Marcus's calculated manipulations. As the eviction deadline looms, a devastating betrayal rocks the Eldridge, exposing secrets and shattering trust.  In the ensuing chaos, the truth about Marcus’s motives is revealed, a twisted act of revenge rooted in a long-held grudge. The final battle takes place not in a courtroom, but within the tunnels themselves. Goliath, realizing the historical significance, seeks to exploit the past for profit. But the tenants, led by Eleanor, Theodore, Beatrice, and Agnes, stage a final act of defiance, Beatrice's music echoing through the tunnels as a beacon of hope.  Elena's coded banners, deciphered, expose Goliath's greed. In the aftermath, the Eldridge stands tall, a testament to the power of collective action.  Elena, Theodore, Beatrice, and Agnes, their bonds forged in struggle, watch the sunrise paint the Brooklyn skyline.  They haven't just saved a building; they’ve rediscovered the true meaning of community, the enduring legacy of the past, and the power of hope in the face of adversity.  The Eldridge stands as a beacon, a reminder that even against overwhelming odds, the fabric of community, woven with courage and determination, can withstand the strongest storms.

One day, I laid down in my son's bed and hit record in the voice messages app on my phone. I didn't really have a plan for what I was going to say or how the story would unfold, I just spoke. I did that again and again, one chapter at a time, for a few weeks, until this epic story was done, and my boys were hooked. And now we're working on Book 2! This is a book series that was inspired by my second son, Asher. In the 4th year of his epic little life, he took a liking to all things pirates. But one day, I offered him a bit of world-shattering information: pirates are bad (evil, criminal, selfish, etc). However, instead of feeling dismayed, Asher was very quick to inform me that he wasn't a bad pirate, he was "God's Pirate"... I dialogued with him a bit about what that meant and sure enough, the little guy had formed in his head a reality where God had a pirate who sailed the seas to evangelize to other pirates and do good deeds, not bad deeds. This God's Pirate seemed like a young Apostle Paul and the Robin Hood of the seas! So, this sweet little tale was born. Alas, recording began not long after with only that premise in mind and the name Asher Robin. Even the title wasn't worked out until I hit record! Of course, you'll probably notice some audio inserts, where I thought of what to say after recording. But for the most part, every chapter, every scene, every word was thought up on the spot during those wonderful evenings where my boys were sitting with eyes wide watching me as I told this story. Sometimes they cried, sometimes they protested plot developments (as you'll hear in the recording), but all the time, their interest was on what would happen next. You'll hear me stutter, yawn, and correct myself as I go. That's all part of this authentic journey, where a little pirate begins the Greatest Treasure Hunt. At age eleven, Helen disappeared in the wilderness of Mount Rainier National Park while camping with her father, Benjamin. She was gone for almost a week before being discovered and returned to her family. It is now twenty-five years later, and after more than two decades of estrangement, Helen and Benjamin reconnect at his home in Portland, Oregon, to try to understand what happened during the days she was gone. Meanwhile, Benjamin meets an odd pair, a woman and boy who seem driven to help him learn more about Helen's disappearance and send him on a journey that will lead to a murder house, uncanny possession, and a bone-filled body of water known as Sad Clown Lake, a lake "that could only be found by getting lost, that was never in the same place twice."

Passersthrough is a haunted, starkly lyrical exploration of family, memory, and the border between life and death.
