Sinossi

"Time Travel" explores the captivating question of humanity's potential to manipulate time, delving into the physics that both enables and restricts such possibilities. It examines Einstein's theories of relativity, which revolutionized our understanding by revealing time's relativity to an observer's motion and gravity. Quantum mechanics adds another layer, suggesting time may not be as continuous as we perceive. Understanding these concepts is crucial for grappling with the scientific plausibility of time travel, a concept often explored in science fiction. The book navigates the evolution of our understanding of time, emphasizing that while current physics doesn't entirely rule out some forms of time travel, the practical challenges are immense. It progresses by first laying the groundwork with space-time concepts and then explores theoretical possibilities like wormholes, paradoxes like the grandfather paradox, and experimental efforts. This approach distinguishes the text, focusing on scientific plausibility rather than mere speculation, making it valuable for science enthusiasts seeking a grounded assessment. Ultimately, "Time Travel" provides a balanced overview of the scientific aspects, acknowledging ongoing debates and unproven theories. While exploring theoretical possibilities, it emphasizes the vast gulf between theoretical considerations and practical feasibility, offering readers a critical perspective on the boundaries of scientific advancement. This book references key findings and theoretical models proposed by physicists like Einstein, Gödel, and Hawking, explaining the science but avoiding jargon.

There are few stories more remarkable than the evolution of life on earth. Where did humans come from? Where did life come from? New fields of study, such as molecular biology and astrobiology, are shedding remarkable new light on the origin of life and the origin of sex.In this Very Short Introduction Michael J. Benton covers all the main fossil groups, including dinosaurs, and the upheavals such as mass extinctions that have beset our planet and life on Earth. Benton highlights the key episodes in the evolution of life from its origin over some four billion years, to the ten million or more species today. The book ends with a consideration of humans themselves, with our ability to modify the Earth in ways that no other species has ever done, and the consequences of that power.

Joseph Lister was born near London in 1827. He studied medicine at the University of London and pursued a career as a surgeon in Scotland. He became professor of Surgery in Glasgow and later (1877) at Kings College Hospital, in London. Lister’s contribution to the advancement of surgery cannot be overestimated. Before his work on antisepsis, wounds were often left open to heal, leading to long recoveries, unsightly scarring, and not infrequently amputation or death due to infection. Lister’s work enabled more wounds to be closed primarily with sutures, drastically reducing healing time, scarring, amputations, and deaths due to infection. Lister retired in 1896 but was called back to assist in the operation on King Edward VII for appendicitis just days before the King’s coronation. The King later credited Lister for his survival and quick recovery. Lister died in 1912. (Summary by Martin Clifton)

    Saving Ourselves - From Climate...

    Dana R. Fisher

We've known for decades that climate change is an existential crisis. For just as long, we've seen the complete failure of our institutions to rise to the challenge. Fossil fuel interests maintain a stranglehold on political and economic power. Even though we have seen growing concern from everyday people, civil society has succeeded only in pressuring decision makers to adopt watered-down policies. Is there any hope of achieving the systemic change we need?

Dana R. Fisher argues that there is a realistic path forward for climate action—but only through mass mobilization that responds to the growing severity and frequency of disastrous events. She assesses the current state of affairs and shows why public policy and private-sector efforts have been ineffective. Spurred by this lack of progress, climate activism has become increasingly confrontational. Fisher examines the radical flank of the climate movement: its emergence and growth, its use of direct action, and how it might evolve as the climate crisis worsens. She considers when and how activism is most successful, identifying the importance of creating community, capitalizing on shocking moments, and cultivating resilience. Clear-eyed yet optimistic, Saving Ourselves offers timely insights on how social movements can take power back and open windows of opportunity for transformative climate action.
