  The Zapotec civilization emerged in the valleys of Oaxaca, a region characterized by its fertile land, diverse ecosystems, and strategic position for trade and agriculture. Archaeological evidence suggests that the earliest Zapotec communities began forming around 1500 BCE, with small farming villages dotting the landscape. Over time, these settlements grew in complexity, giving rise to a society that would become one of Mesoamerica’s most influential civilizations. 
  Early Zapotec communities relied heavily on agriculture, cultivating maize, beans, squash, and chili peppers—staples that formed the foundation of their diet. The region’s rivers and seasonal rains provided a reliable water source, allowing for irrigation techniques that supported larger populations. As food production increased, villages expanded, and the need for organization led to the development of social hierarchies. Religious leaders, warriors, and skilled artisans began to hold distinct roles in society, paving the way for the emergence of political structures. 
  By the first millennium BCE, the Zapotecs had established themselves as a dominant force in the Oaxaca Valley. Unlike nomadic or loosely structured societies, they developed permanent settlements with planned architecture, ceremonial centers, and marketplaces. This period saw the rise of San José Mogote, one of the earliest known Zapotec centers, where the first signs of their writing system and political organization appeared. San José Mogote’s influence laid the groundwork for the later establishment of Monte Albán, which would become the heart of Zapotec power.

  Dr. Landowski was a Russianized Pole and lived in Russia. His father, a Colonel of the Russian Imperial Army, was shot by the Bolsheviks during the 1917 revolution. The life-story of Dr. Landowski is astonishing. He finished the Faculty of Medicine in Russia before the revolution and then studied two years at the Sorbonne in Paris, and he spoke fluent French. He was interested in the effects of drugs on the human organism, to help surgeons in operations. Being a talented doctor, he carried out experiments in this field and had achieved considerable results. The all-seeing NKVD (secret police) became interested in these works and easily discovered the real author. His specialty was very valuable for them. One day in 1936 there was a knock at the doctor's door. He was invited to follow, and he was never again allowed to rejoin his family. He was placed in the building of the chemical laboratory of the NKVD near Moscow. He lived there and was forced to carry out various jobs given to him by his masters, he was a witness at questionings, tortures and the most terrible happenings and crimes. This book is an exact recorded report of the questioning of the former Ambassador in France, C.G. Rakovsky during the period of the trials of the Trotskyists in the USSR in 1938, when he was tried together with Bukharin, Rykoff, Yagoda, Karakhan, Dr. Levin and others. The questioning took place in French by this agent. The doctor was present in order to put drug pills unnoticed into the glass of Rakovsky, to induce energy and a good mood. Behind the wall the conversation was registered on apparatus, and the technician who operated it did not understand French. Then Dr. Landowski had to translate into Russian, with two copies, for Stalin and Gabriel. Secretly he dared to make a carbon copy, which he hid anyway.

  The Underground Railroad is one of the most taught topics to young schoolchildren, and every American is familiar with the idea of fugitive slaves escaping to Canada and the North with the help of determined abolitionists and even former escaped slaves like Harriet Tubman. The secrecy involved in the Underground Railroad made it one of the most mysterious aspects of the mid-19th century in America, to the extent that claims spread that 100,000 slaves had escaped via the Underground Railroad. Of course, from a practical standpoint, the Underground Railroad had to remain covert not only for the sake of thousands of slaves, but for a small army of men and women of every race, religion and economic class who put themselves in peril on an ongoing basis throughout the first half of the 19th century, and in the years leading up to the war.  
  	Over 150 years later, that same secrecy has helped the Underground Railroad become so romanticized and mythologized that people often visualize it in ways that were far different from reality. Before the American Civil War eliminated slavery, it was a fixture in North America for over 200 years, and by 1850 a trained slave was worth approximately $2,500, around 10 times the sum of a typical annual salary in that day. As a result, the economic dependence on slavery in the South was an extreme one, and in the wake of the Fugitive Slave Act, black people in the North were under constant pressure to defend their “credentials” to bounty hunters and owners. Between the value of slaves in America, rising abolitionist sentiment at home and overseas, and political debates promoting or hindering the movement toward equality, the era in which the Underground Railroad operated cannot be easily fit into a concise body of principles, actions or geography.
