Sinossi

Discover the Lost Secrets of the Ancients and the Time When Stones Floated High over Egypt   Throughout history, folklore, and mystery, tales have circulated of massive stones being moved through the air effortlessly by sound. Bizarre? Well, yes, it is. That doesn't take away the fact that sound was, and still remains, the key to the construction of the pyramids of Egypt, Stonehenge, the stone figures of Easter Island, and the massive stones at Baalbek, Lebanon. Were they the work of ancient humans or of equally ancient extraterrestrials? How Antigravity Built the Pyramids delves into specific stories and theories:• A 9th-century story of a mysterious papyrus with the power to move large stones at the Giza Necropolis • The Mayan story of the construction of the Pyramid of the Magician said to be overseen by a small humanoid who could whistle large stones into place • Native American stories of ancient priests being able to make stones light to move easily    Author Nick Redfern argues it was not literally music and whistling that somehow raised large stones, but both have one thing in common: sound. Acoustics. Almost certainly, acoustic levitation was at the heart of these incredible feats. The truth of the science behind acoustic levitation was lost and forgotten for ages with little more left than fanciful tales of music, whistles, a curious papyrus, and strange metal rods that could achieve incredible feats in the air. Today, we are finally starting to get a grasp on this incredible technology, a technology that may have been the work of ancient humans, aliens from faraway worlds—or, perhaps, a combination of the two.

Dark matter is one of the greatest mysteries in modern science. Despite being invisible and undetectable by traditional means, it makes up approximately 27% of the universe’s total mass and energy. It does not emit, absorb, or reflect light, making it completely transparent to current observational instruments. However, scientists are certain of its existence due to its gravitational effects on visible matter, radiation, and the large-scale structure of the universe. Its discovery has led to a major shift in our understanding of the cosmos, revealing that most of the universe’s matter remains hidden from our view.
The term "dark matter" was first introduced in the early 20th century, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that astronomers began to recognize its significant role in the universe. In 1933, Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky observed the motion of galaxies within clusters and noted that the amount of visible matter in these clusters was insufficient to account for their observed gravitational effects. This led him to propose the existence of an unseen form of matter, which he referred to as "dark matter." Over the following decades, similar observations were made by astronomers studying the rotation of individual galaxies. The rotation speeds of galaxies were found to be much higher than what could be explained by the visible matter in the galaxies. This discrepancy suggested that there was additional, unseen matter providing extra gravitational pull, keeping the galaxies intact and preventing them from flying apart.
Dark matter does not interact with light or other forms of electromagnetic radiation, which is why it cannot be directly observed. It’s not made up of the usual atoms and particles that constitute the familiar matter we see in everyday life. Instead, it seems to consist of particles that do not interact with electromagnetic forces, which is why they are invisible.

In Canopy of Titans, Paul Koberstein and Jessica Applegate examine the global importance of the Pacific Coastal Temperate Rainforest that stretches from Northern California to Alaska. Their urgent and authoritative account sets out the threats facing a vital environmental resource, and celebrates the beauty and complexity of one of the world's great forests.

Drawing on years of on-the-ground reporting, Koberstein and Applegate pull back the curtain on policies of governmental bodies that have seriously diminished the rainforest's capacity to store carbon, and uncover industry practices that have led to the destruction of swaths of a major ecological resource. Additionally, using an environmental justice perspective, Canopy of Titans shines a light on the Indigenous communities that have lived in the rainforest for millennia, and the impact forest policies have had on their lives.

The acclaimed Pulitzer Prize finalist and #1 New York Times bestselling author of Galileo’s Daughter crafts a luminous chronicle of the most famous woman in the history of science, and the untold story of the remarkable young women trained in her laboratory

“Even now, nearly a century after her death, Marie Curie remains the only female scientist most people can name,” writes Dava Sobel at the opening of her shining portrait of the sole Nobel laureate decorated in two separate fields of science—Physics in 1903 with her husband, Pierre, and Chemistry by herself in 1911. And yet, as brilliant and creative as she was in the laboratory, Marie Curie was equally memorable outside it. Grieving Pierre’s untimely death in 1906, she took his place as professor of physics at the Sorbonne, devotedly raised two brilliant daughters, drove a van she outfitted with X-ray equipment to the front lines of World War I, befriended Albert Einstein and other luminaries of twentieth-century physics, won support from two US presidents, and inspired generations of young women to pursue science as a way of life.

As Sobel did so masterfully in her portrait of Galileo through the prism of his daughter, she approaches Marie Curie from a unique angle, narrating her remarkable life of discovery and fame alongside the women who became her legacy—from France’s Marguerite Perey, who discovered the element francium, and Norway’s Ellen Gleditsch, to Mme. Curie’s elder daughter, Irène, winner of the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. For decades the only woman in the room at international scientific gatherings that probed new theories about the interior of the atom, Marie Curie traveled far and wide, despite constant illness, to share the secrets of radioactivity, a term she coined. Her two triumphant tours of the United States won her admirers for her modesty even as she was mobbed at every stop; her daughters, in Ève’s later recollection, “discovered all at once what the retiring woman with whom they had always lived meant to the world.”

With the consummate skill that made bestsellers of Longitude and Galileo’s Daughter, and the appreciation for women in science at the heart of The Glass Universe, Dava Sobel has authored a radiant biography and a masterpiece of storytelling, illuminating the life and enduring influence of one of the most consequential figures of our time.
