Summary

In "Celtic Literature," Matthew Arnold embarks on a profound exploration of the rich tapestry of literary traditions stemming from the Celtic regions. The book adeptly combines literary criticism with cultural analysis, examining works from the Irish, Welsh, and Scottish literary canon. Arnold's stylistic approach is marked by its lyrical prose and nuanced discussions, positioning Celtic narratives within the broader context of 19th-century literature. He delves into themes of myth, identity, and the spiritual undercurrents that characterize Celtic works, illuminating their significance in the evolution of literary expression in England and beyond. Matthew Arnold, a prominent Victorian poet and cultural critic, found inspiration in the Celtic revival of the 19th century, a period that saw a burgeoning interest in folklore and national identity. His background in education and advocacy for the arts likely influenced his desire to elevate Celtic literature in the eyes of contemporary readers. Through his insightful commentary, Arnold not only champions these literary forms but also raises critical questions regarding the role of culture in shaping national consciousness. This book is highly recommended for enthusiasts of literature and cultural history, as it offers a compelling lens through which to appreciate the depth and continuity of Celtic narratives. Arnold's eloquent analysis will engage scholars and casual readers alike, inviting them to reconsider the value and relevance of Celtic literature in the modern literary landscape.

The Gangs of New York: An Informal History of the Underworld is an American non-fiction book by Herbert Asbury, first published in 1928 by Alfred A. Knopf. It formed the basis for Martin Scorsese's 2002 Academy Award-winning film Gangs of New York, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Cameron Diaz.
In 1927, Asbury published an article in The American Mercury, titled "The Old-Time Gangs of New York", which was ultimately incorporated into the book published the following year. Drawing on the muckraking style of the era, the author wrote based on "legend, memory, police records, the self-aggrandizements of aging crooks, popular journalism, and solid historical research", to present an illuminating account of the gangs of old New York that ultimately gave rise to the Mafia as we know it today, from films like The Godfather.
The book outlines the rise and fall of 19th century gangs in New York City, prior to the domination of the Italian-American Mafia during Prohibition in the 1920s. Focusing on the saloon halls, gambling dens, and winding alleys of the Bowery and the Five Points district of Lower Manhattan, the book evokes the destitution and violence of a turbulent era, when colorfully named criminals like "Dandy" Johnny Dolan, William Poole (also known as "Bill the Butcher"), and Hell-Cat Maggie lurked in the shadows, corrupt politicians like William "Boss" Tweed run the city, and infamous gangs including the Plug Uglies, Dead Rabbits, and Bowery Boys ruled the streets. It includes a rogues' gallery of prostitutes, pimps, poisoners, pickpockets, murderers, and thieves.
The book contains detailed accounts of the New York City Draft Riots of 1863. It also elaborates on numerous other criminal influences of the time, including river pirates and the corrupt political establishment, such as Tammany Hall.

Did you know that Shah Jahan once planned to build another Taj Mahal in his empire?
The Taj Mahal is renowned for its exceptional architecture that infuses elements from various influences around the world, including the magnificence of Mughal, Persian, and Islamic architectural styles.
Shah Jahan, the reigning emperor of the Mughal Empire, had been plagued with sadness following the death of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. And so, as a parting gift to her, the mourning emperor commissioned the construction of a grand mausoleum made of white marble.
Upon completion, the Taj Mahal stood on the banks of the Yamuna River, impressing those who gazed at its marvelous façade glimmering under the bright sun. A reflective pool enhanced its perfections, but it was the mausoleum’s symmetrical design that captivated many. The symmetry could be seen in each corner of the complex except for Mumtaz Mahal’s extravagant tomb chamber—the symmetrical design was broken when Shah Jahan’s cenotaph was added years later.
Some said it was intentional, while others claimed Shah Jahan never intended to be buried beside his wife. Legend has it that the emperor was planning to build another mausoleum for himself that mirrored the Taj Mahal; it was to be placed across from the Taj Mahal and made of black marble. However, whether this is true remains a debate. Ancient sources contradict each other, which can be confusing for curious readers.
But that is about to change. With this all-new history audiobook, you can easily explore the gripping events that led to the construction of the Seven Wonders of the New World.

The Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of the United States of America. It superseded the Articles of Confederation, the nation's first constitution, in 1789. Originally comprising seven articles, it delineates the national frame of government. Its first three articles embody the doctrine of the separation of powers, whereby the federal government is divided into three branches: the legislative, consisting of the bicameral Congress (Article I); the executive, consisting of the president and subordinate officers (Article II); and the judicial, consisting of the Supreme Court and other federal courts (Article III). Article IV, Article V, and Article VI embody concepts of federalism, describing the rights and responsibilities of state governments, the states in relationship to the federal government, and the shared process of a constitutional amendment. Article VII establishes the procedure subsequently used by the 13 states to ratify it. It is regarded as the oldest written and codified national constitution in force.

Since the Constitution came into force in 1789, it has been amended 27 times, including one amendment that repealed a previous one, in order to meet the needs of a nation that has profoundly changed since the 18th century. In general, the first ten amendments, known collectively as the Bill of Rights, offer specific protections of individual liberty and justice and place restrictions on the powers of government within the U.S. states. The majority of the 17 later amendments expand individual civil rights protections. Others address issues related to federal authority or modify government processes and procedures. Amendments to the United States Constitution, unlike ones made to many constitutions worldwide, are appended to the document. The original U.S. Constitution was written on five pages of parchment.
