Synopsis

Rise of Homeschooling explores the increasing prevalence of homeschooling as an alternative to traditional education. It examines the historical context, motivations, and outcomes associated with this educational choice. The book highlights how homeschooling has evolved from fringe unschooling philosophies to a significant movement driven by factors like dissatisfaction with traditional schools and the desire for personalized learning. Interestingly, student success in homeschooling often hinges on parental involvement, access to resources, and how well the approach fits a child's unique learning style.

This academic deep-dive progresses logically, beginning with the philosophical and historical foundations of homeschooling. It then dissects parental motivations and homeschooling methodologies, including case studies. An analysis of academic outcomes and standardized testing data follows, comparing homeschooled students with traditionally schooled peers. The book provides valuable insights into academic outcomes, the diverse methodologies employed, and the factors influencing student success. It avoids generalizations, recognizing the wide range of approaches to curriculum and instruction, offering a nuanced understanding of personalized learning versus standardized testing.

Ultimately, Rise of Homeschooling offers a balanced perspective, challenging simplistic narratives and advocating for a nuanced understanding of its complexities and potential benefits. The book concludes with a discussion of the long-term societal implications of homeschooling, including its impact on civic engagement and higher education, making it valuable for policymakers, educators, and parents alike.

Our brain is a muscle. Like our bodies, it needs exercise. In the last few hundred years, we have stopped training our memories and we have lost the ability to memorize large amounts of information—something our ancestors could do with ease. After discovering that the true purpose of monuments like Easter Island and Stonehenge were to act as memory palaces, Kelly takes this knowledge and introduces us to the best memory techniques humans have ever devised, from ancient times and the Middle Ages to methods used by today’s memory athletes. A memory champion herself, Kelly tests all these methods and demonstrate the extraordinary capacity of our brains at any age.For anyone who needs to memorize a speech or a script, learn anatomy or a foreign language, or prepare for an exam, Memory Craft offers proven techniques and simple strategies for anyone who has trouble remembering names or dates, or for older people who want to keep their minds agile. In addition to getting in touch with our own human and anthropological foundations, Memory Craft shows how all things mnemonic can be playful, creative, and fun.

    The Social Animal -...

Human beings are inherently social creatures, shaped by the need to interact, communicate, and form relationships with others. The social nature of humans is deeply rooted in evolutionary history, where cooperation and group cohesion were essential for survival. Over time, human societies have become increasingly complex, but the fundamental need for social connection remains central to human identity and behavior. This chapter explores the biological, psychological, and sociological foundations of human sociality and how they shape individual and collective behavior.
From an evolutionary perspective, human beings have always relied on social bonds for protection, resource sharing, and collective problem-solving. Early human groups depended on coordinated hunting, gathering, and defense mechanisms to survive in harsh environments. Natural selection favored individuals who could effectively communicate, cooperate, and form alliances, leading to the development of social behaviors such as empathy, altruism, and social hierarchies. The human brain evolved to process social information, with structures such as the prefrontal cortex playing a critical role in understanding and responding to social cues.
Psychologically, the need for social connection is reflected in the human desire for belonging, acceptance, and emotional support. Attachment theory, developed by John Bowlby, suggests that early attachment to caregivers forms the foundation for future social relationships.

For almost a decade, Backpage.com was the world's largest sex trafficking operation. Seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day, in 800 cities throughout the world, Backpage ran thousands of listings advertising the sale of vulnerable young people for sex. Reaping a cut off every transaction, the owners of the website raked in millions of dollars. But many of the people in the advertisements were children, as young as twelve, and forced into the commercial sex trade through fear, violence and coercion.

In Taking Down Backpage, veteran California prosecutor Maggy Krell tells the story of how she and her team prevailed against this sex trafficking monolith. Beginning with her early career as a young DA, she shares the evolution of the anti-human trafficking movement. Through a fascinating combination of memoir and legal insight, Krell reveals how she and her team started with the prosecution of street pimps and ultimately ended with the takedown of the largest purveyor of human trafficking in the world. She shares powerful stories of interviews with victims, sting operations, court cases, and the personal struggles that were necessary to bring Backpage executives to justice. Finally, Krell examines the state of sex trafficking after Backpage and the crucial work that still remains.

Start of the Vietnam War The:...

The Vietnam War could have been called a comedy of errors if the consequences weren’t so deadly and tragic. In 1951, while war was raging in Korea, the United States began signing defense pacts with nations in the Pacific, intending to create alliances that would contain the spread of Communism. As the Korean War was winding down, America joined the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization, pledging to defend several nations in the region from Communist aggression. One of those nations was South Vietnam.
Before the Vietnam War, most Americans would have been hard pressed to locate Vietnam on a map. South Vietnamese President Diệm’s regime was extremely unpopular, and war broke out between Communist North Vietnam and South Vietnam around the end of the 1950s. Kennedy’s administration tried to prop up the South Vietnamese with training and assistance, but the South Vietnamese military was feeble. A month before his death, Kennedy signed a presidential directive withdrawing 1,000 American personnel, and shortly after Kennedy’s assassination, new President Lyndon B. Johnson reversed course, instead opting to expand American assistance to South Vietnam.
The post-analysis of war is a complicated and process that benefits from hindsight, and the involvement of the United States in Vietnam over about a decade was no exception. Never formally declared as a “war,” the Vietnam War was not fought in clean lines or with clear missions. Viewers of the evening news listening to the “box score” of killed and wounded each night had at best a hazy notion of what was happening a world away in Southeast Asia. If anything, their leaders were both attentive to reelection and on a certain level were themselves unsure of what was truly taking place. A military draft that sent over 50,000 American soldiers to their deaths was triggered by a resolution sought by President Lyndon B. Johnson in a decision to contain communism in a distant Asian land.
