Summary

"Educational Equity" explores the pervasive issue of unequal educational opportunities, examining how factors like zip code can predict a child's academic success more reliably than their actual potential. The book delves into the historical roots and socio-economic influences that perpetuate achievement gaps, highlighting the urgent need for social justice within the education system. It emphasizes that achieving true equity isn't merely about equal resources; it requires tailored support to help students from diverse backgrounds reach their full potential, addressing systemic injustices that create educational disparities.

This academic work uniquely connects disciplines like education, sociology, and public policy to provide a holistic understanding of educational inequality. By analyzing student achievement data, classroom practices, and policy evaluations, the book presents evidence-based strategies for transformative change. Beginning with definitions and historical context, it progresses through specific disparities like school funding and teacher quality before examining their impact on marginalized student populations.

Ultimately, "Educational Equity" adopts a solutions-oriented approach, offering practical steps for educators, policymakers, and community leaders to advance educational equity. It serves as a guide for those seeking to understand and dismantle the systemic barriers hindering equal access to education, promoting policy reform for a more just and equitable system.

Ramakrishna was an Indian Hindu mystic and religious leader, who lived in 19th-century Bengal. Ramakrishna approached his religious life through the path of devotion to the Goddess Kali, and by the observance of various elements from Tantra, Vaishnav Bhakti, and Advaita Vedanta, as well as dalliances with Christianity and Islam. After earnest practice of various religious traditions, he held that the world's religions represented "so many paths to reach one and the same goal". His followers came to regard him as a divine incarnation, as did some of the prominent scholars of his day.

Ramakrishna started his spiritual journey as a priest at the Dakshineshwar Kali Temple. Soon his mystical temperament gained him widespread acknowledgment amongst the general public attracting to him various religious teachers, social leaders, Bengali elites, and common people alike; he eventually taught his disciples, who later formed the monastic Ramakrishna Order. After his death, his chief disciple Swami Vivekananda popularized his ideas and founded the Ramakrishna Math, which provides spiritual training for monastics and householder devotees, and the Ramakrishna Mission, to provide charity, social work, and education.

Sarada Devi was the wife of Ramakrishna. Devi is also reverentially addressed as the Holy Mother by the followers of the Sri Ramakrishna monastic order. She played an important role in the growth of the Ramakrishna Movement.

“We're all just walking each other home.”

“The quieter you become, the more you can hear.”

“We're fascinated by the words--but where we meet is in the silence behind them.”

“It is important to expect nothing, to take every experience, including the negative ones, as merely steps on the path, and to proceed.”
    ― Ram Dass

Dr. Richard Alpert, a former Harvard professor and Timothy Leary cohort, was an icon of the hippie, LSD-fueled revolution of the 1960s. Thereafter, on a trip to India - like Clark Kent changing into Superman - he became the much-beloved spiritual teacher Baba Ram Das. His 1970s' iconic book Be Here Now turned on a generation to the deep, non-sectarian spirituality within us all.

Author Sripad Jagannatha Dasa became friends with Ram Das in the early '70s and traveled across America, playing Indian drums at his speaking engagements. During that time, the two discussed the publication of some of his lectures, but nothing was ever done, and the two lost touch. Now, finally, after all these years, Jagannatha Dasa keeps his promise to his old friend, publishing this original audio history of one of our most inspired and cherished spiritual teachers.
